I had a look, they seem pretty expensive
I had a look around, their proper name is a Deadlift Jack.
All gym equipment is expensive. Plates alone cost a fortune
Yeah. Picking up 2x 20kg plates tomorrow (thought they were 25kg each but their site says otherwise) at $60 each.
Plates cost a fortune because they are cast iron. Cast iron alone is incredibly expensive in this day and age - just think of pots and pans that are cast iron, they are the best in the business but you can shell out up to $300 for one.
Gym equipment isn't that expensive. Marcy/York and the sort are reasonably priced for what you get, and in the long run you save a hell of a lot of money from not buying gym memberships and the sort.

I quite like my home gym. It's just way more convenient and I don't like machines anyway.
Are you using an olympic bar or a standard bar? There's not much difference other than the weight of the bar and the thickness of the heads (and the fact it can take more weight, but I doubt you're gonna be lifting 320kg).
For 2x20kg Olympic plates it's about $100 USD.... but you might be saying $60 AUS, which is pretty damn cheap, so you shouldn't be complaining!

a rack (for squatting, benching, ohp etc.) ~200-300 euro
an adjustable bench ~100-150 euro
My brother already had a db set, but we'll need more plates for those ~20-50euro
Olympic bar ~50 euro
Plates ~300 euro
So i'm looking at maybe 1000 euro max, as i'm not 100% sure on all the prices.
Thats about a years of gym memebership costs and its only essentials so I'll probably add stuff along the way.
The thing is, once i'm studying again, my father pays for my gym membership and it has almost everything i need and its only a 5min bike ride.

Then why are you even considering a home gym?
A Marcy Olympic bench goes for about 140EUR and a decent Olympic bar is over 50EUR (closer to 70). Squat rack is about right, but you're looking at the lower end of 200, not closer to 300.
But you don't need to buy an Olympic bar separate, just buy a full weight set for about 300EUR which includes the olympic bar + 185KG of plates (which I highly doubt you'll reach, so it's a pretty good deal).
That's only about 700 euros. Not 1000.

It's just a standard bar. I couldn't afford an olympic bar plus plates at the time, so I got the cheapest one I could.Zimmer wrote:

Yeah, $60 AUD per 20kg plate. So $120 AUD all up for the pair.
You got a pretty sweet deal. That's about £75 over here, where 2x20kg would cost me £90.Jaekus wrote:

Fair enough, you're not missing out on much having the standard bar.
That's pretty expensive indeed.
I think the bar was $50 and the plates are $3 per kilo.
I currently have 4x 10kg, 2x 5kg, 2x 2.5kg and 3x 1.25kg plates.
The squat rack I have is the cheapest they sell, it was $180.

I never said i was, I looked into it a while ago because my brother wanted it, even though my father would pay for his gym membership as well if he'd go at least once or twice, but he's too much of a lazy fuck.Zimmer wrote:

But i figured if he would chip in as well, I might as well check what it would cost me. If my current gym would close, i might consider it, as there aren't really any other (good) gyms around
I got a pretty sweet bench for 60 euro and 100KG weight set including dumbbells and barbell for 120 euro.
Second workout of the SL 5x5.
I didn't start with the empty bar, I started with the weights I was previously on as I had been going up by 2.5kg every workout anyway (5kg for DL), only I was doing 3x8. Feels good man. I dropped back the weight slightly on the bench press, bent over row and military press, but the squats and DL were always gonna keep going up anyway.
I know it sounds ridiculous after the second workout but I'm already feeling stronger. Maybe because the 3x8 was exhausting me.
Anyway, I hope to gain a lot of strength over the next couple months, see where I'm at and then reassess my goals - might look at gaining a bit of mass. See how I go.

Is that like drop sets (also called descending sets)?

Nah, it's a strength building program.
You do a couple warm up sets at reduced weight and then 5 sets of your working weight, 5 reps each set. Start off relatively light and every workout add 2.5kg, or 5lbs, to your working weight. Three workouts each week, two different routines.
More info here - http://stronglifts.com/stronglifts-5x5- … g-program/
Ebook here - http://stronglifts.com/5x5-report-too-late/
If the above doesn't work I can email you the book. I don't agree with all he says because I think he's skewing some of the information to promote his product, but the workout itself is solid from what I understand.

bought some 0.5kg plates but they aren't olympic so I'm going to cable tie them so they hang from the bar, pikey style.
£1.99 from JJB, otherwise it was about £8 each for olympic ones

Just curious, why 0.5kg? My smallest are 1.25kg (well, I have 0.5kg for my DBs, but you can't put them on a BB).
Overhead press with the barbell.
2.5kg a time is too much to go up every time i do it for shoulders

Yeah good point.
On that note I've been doing overhead press seated, with back rest. I did some reading last night about it being a better workout standing or without a back rest. So today I did 4 sets of 5 without the rest. Worked my core a lot more, though couple times I nearly buckled as I nearly lost balance, could've ended badly. Tried the last set standing and it felt better and like I was more in control. Only problem is I had to carry the barbell to another part under the house and that just isn't practical. Might need to rearrange my setup.

I found standing up a struggle to keep form until i figured i had my stance too wide so i couldn't engage my glutes, a lot more stable now.
Plus you feel pretty powerful lifting iron above your head, even if for me it's only 30kg at the moment
I just talked to my brother on why he would want a home gym. That guy really is the biggest curlbro i know. He has 2 dumbells and the only thing he does is hammer curls, and when i tell how he should use a bar if we were to make a homegym he will fiercly defend his db curl exercises.
I would like a rack for squatting, benching and OHPing, all he wants is a small bench so he can press because thats all he did in the gym, bench press and curls. he never did squats or deadlifts as he claims he doesn't need them because his legs are already strong enough.
What a douche

i have no fucking idea how that guy got as big as he did from working out 2 times a week for a year with just benching and curling. he has way better genetics than i do for it, but he's a complete fucking retard when i comes to fitness. He never had a diet (just junkfood) or a routine. And he's always making retarded comments on my dieting/working out.
Yes, I'm a little mad
