I've been really slack. One workout in a fortnight. Had a massive weekend partying and missed working out today. Gotta get back into it.

On a plus I've lost a kilo in the past two weeks, though I guess some is muscle. I haven't been eating a lot either. Damn flu getting me off track.

My lifts are going up. Squatted 105kgx5, benched 75x5 and rowed 80x5 today. I'm happy

Not really. Squats I could manage 100kgs before, but with shitty technique. Dropped down to 75kg, worked on my technique and went from there.

Bench is going pretty smooth yes, now I hope I can just follow up my deadlifts, I've been stuck on 120-130kg forever!

When you lie on the bench, make sure you stare just past the bar, so not directly under it. Hold the bar above your nipples and lower it until a centimeter above your chest and then push it back up.
this might be a bit tricky, but try to keep your shoulder together, if youre unsure about this dont do it, if you dont distribute it even, you can injure your shoulder.

What do you mean by "keep my shoulder together"? I know how to move the bar, it just seems like my right side is always doing more work than my left arm, and that they are moving in different paths that work them slightly differently.

this. You do this by sort of pressing your shoulderblades together to create a flat surface.

..also make sure that your arms are even, you're well centered on the bench, and both of your legs are planted at an even distance. I use my thumbs to measure out on the bar, depending on if I am doing wide for chest, or close for focusing more on my arms.

Usually when you hit muscle failure (with a spotter hopefully) your weaker arm is going to push through, because you've subconsciously favored your stronger arm throughout your routine. I used to wonder why that was for most people. .

i have a conundrum.

It seems whenever I give myself a few days off I can push and lift a lot more. Is this how it should be?

For example, I normally lift tues/thurs/sunday but the past two weeks I've missed sunday. On tuesday, after the extra rest, I seem to be able to lift quite a bit more. Normally I start with bench press and hit failure right around the last rep of my 3rd set. Yesterday, after not lifting sunday, all the benches were full at my gym so I started with decline press (normally done at the end for me) and added 20lbs to my normal amount and did it almost TOO easily (granted I was about to move up in weight on that AND I normally do it near the end when I'm already pooped) and immediately went to bench press and did my normal weight at 3x10 and didn't fail on the last few reps like normal.

Is this just how it normally is or do I need to change something?

I think the extra rest does play some part in it, but you also did decline first and flat afterwards and a lot earlier than usual. So you were not as tired but more warmed up.
Not quite sure of you should change something.
Although i personally would never do bench press last because i want to give that lift everything i got while I'm still rested, but thats up to you.

Do you normally do your chest 3 times a week (only example)? Seems like a lot to me. You probably aren't fully repairing if you do that. With resistance exercises it is best to have more rather than less rest... that is unless you have a hard time getting in to the gym. By making sure you get enough rest you avoid a constant catabolic state, and you're nice and repaired. I notice that my energy levels are different on different days as well. Some days I just feel depleted. .. it might just be a motivation issue.

Well usually I do chest (since we're on that) and tris thrice a week. Too much? Major muscle groups twice a week?

I would have thought it be just one of those days where I'm feeling it (I did just throw on a new CD i got which got me jacked for working out) but it's happened a few times and I've noticed that every time it's when I have extended days off

Yea, I'd think chest three times a week would not be optimal. Twice is probably fine if you switch up heavy and light. Personally, I've had great gains on the bench working it once a week. However, everbody isn't the same. That is the routine that works for me. Also consider tri's are often worked when you do non-tri specific exercise. Shoulder press works the triceps for example. .. or the way your bi's are worked when you do your back.

Right.

When i design my workouts I try to keep in mind that every exercise works at least two muscles/groups (thought this isn't ALWAYS the case obv) so on Chest/Tri's day I do quite a bit of stuff for both: bench press, dips, db flys, incline db press, pec deck, decline bench.

Still haven't worked out this week. I feel guilty. I have reasons though... too hungover on Monday, too busy today... hopefully I can do it Friday.

Thinking about starting the Stronglifts 5x5. Anyone else doing this workout got any comments? I'd be interested to hear how it's going.

I'm also down to 80.5kg. When I started at the end of October I was almost 90kg. Clothes fitting better, everyone has noticed I've lost weight. Feels good man
