So everyone knows search engines are the greatest thing since sliced bread, but.

Do you think search engines limit conversations between people? I mean, almost every question ever asked on a forum has already been asked and is easy to google. What else do search engines limit? Trial and error maybe? I always google a review on two products if I'm split between them, and I'll almost always accept the first answer I'm given.

Anyone else think that search engines are a negative thing?

I don't think so. But then again, I'm not addicted to them, or still socialize with other people to get a review on something. It all depends on the user. Some people may search just for the sake of it, and come across interesting things, or have the desire to come across interesting things. Me? I'm a practical person, I will use a search engine only what it's intended for: to find out information about something; whether it's information I need, or information regarding something that holds my interest.

I honestly don't think search engines "limit conversations between people" as much as other things like social networking sites do.

No.  Having a family, I/we use them for many different reasons.  The obvious medical information is probably the most beneficial.  They are great for carrying on an intelligent conversation with others.  I believe I am much more informed than I ever would have been without search engines.

I have had way to many people tell me things that sound like truth that turn out to be either old information or just down right wrong information.  I love being able to fact check for myself.  Without the search ability of the internet, you would be relying on limited sources for information and thus you are a slave to their twist on things.

Imagine the internet today without search engines .

I think they have hurt my spelling. Mostly because there is no need to try too hard to get it right.

Well for starters you'd have to scrap IE, Firefox, Netscape, Safari, Opera etc. etc.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

I completely agree here, a lot of words I'll simply google and hope that it knows what I'm trying to say. As with Microsoft word, always fixing my errors and shiz.

Try working at a company where English is not the first language of 90% of the people.  It's very hard to type correctly and speak properly when everyone speaks broken english.

I think having such an immense base of knowledge literally at my fingertips is the most amazing thing.  The internet is one of the greatest things ever to happen to humanity.  Thanks Al Gore!

Know how you feel, after 15 yrs working with French, Germans, Japanese, Chinese and Indians my english is stuffed - not that it was great to start with.

Downside of the mass of available information is I can ONLY speed-read now

Search engines have made reference books, encyclopaedias and the like somewhat redundant.

Nope. If anything it makes conversation more meaningful because people aren't asking each other question referential questions.
