So the official fire season for 2009-2010 started here in Australia a couple of weeks back. This thread'll be for all the fire-related stories over the coming six months - unless of course something so catastrophic happens that it warrants its own thread (i.e. firestorm reaching the Sydney suburbs)
This year is predicted to be one of the worst years in history for fires - in terms of fuel load, preceding drought and of course the weather (hot n' dry, it's already bumping up to 27-28 here and it's early spring)
The fires have already begun.

The stay-or-go policy is still in effect EXCEPT at the 'catastrophic' code-red level (the new sixth level) at which the recommendation is that you GTFO early. We learnt last time the consequences of people trying to fight an unfightable fire.

Time to get cracking and start planning, clearing gutters, getting an escape plan ready etc. etc.Firefighters are battling two fires that are threatening homes and property in Queensland's central districts and strong winds are set to test containment lines around a fire on the New South Wales north coast.
Fire crews contained up to 50 fires that burnt across Queensland yesterday, but conditions are fanning more blazes today. There are more than 20 fires burning across the north of New South Wales.
Residents at Mount Archer National Park in central Queensland are on standby to flee as a bushfire approaches homes and properties.
People near Frenchville and Lakes Creek, near Rockhampton, have been told to finalise their bushfire action plans as the blaze is expected to affect communities within the next few hours.
