Born with only half a brain, Mack can speak normally, graduated from high school and has an uncanny knack for dates.

At 27, doctors determined that the right side of her brain had essentially rewired itself to make up for function that was likely lost during pre-birth stroke. But her childhood and young adult years were fraught with frustration.

Not really. Almost all parts of the brain are always working at some level, and different areas of the brain preform different tasks. IIRC most of the higher level brain function, what we would call thinking and conscious thought, is in the front of the brain and the rest is devoted to interpreting the senses and keeping our body functioning.

A child's brain is amazing in the ways it can find to rewire itself to keep everything functioning at as close to its maximum as possible.

I heard somewhere that women are much better at multi-tasking, whereas men can only focus on one, maybe two, things at once.

Of course, it's better to work on one thing at one time and accomplish it with success instead of failing at a million things at once

Test there showed that both male and females are equal.

That is, both can actually NOT multitask at all.
Like a computer (with a single-core CPU) all tasks are actually processed linearly.
Although, humans with their brain can process smaller sub-processes parallel.

I think most of those "multi-task" things are merely the motoric memory, allowing you to do physical tasks like riding a bike or driving a car while without thinking, while doing something else.
