New Superconductor World Record Surpasses 250K

Slashdot.org wrote:

myrrdyn writes to tell us that a new superconductivity record high of 254 Kelvin (-19C, -2F) has been recorded. According to the article this is the first time a superconductive state has been observed at a temperature comparable to a household freezer.

"This achievement was accomplished by combining two previously successful structure types: the upper part of a 9212/2212C and the lower part of a 1223. The chemical elements remain the same as those used in the 242K material announced in May 2009. The host compound has the formula (Tl4Ba)Ba2Ca2Cu7Oy and is believed to attain 254K superconductivity when a 9223 structure forms"
-19C (-2F)...that's the temperature of my Freezer in my kitchen...how cow.

Holy fucking shit.

That's amazing that is.

And potentially revolutionary - a decent high temperature superconductor will utterly transform how we use electricity.

Current superconductors need to be cooled with liquid nitrogen, which boils at -196C, before they become superconductive... Now think about it.. this material (a ceramic?) is superconductive at -19C. Compared to -196C, it requires significantly less energy and money to ensure the temperature stays that cold...

"An electric current flowing in a loop of superconducting wire can persist indefinitely with no power source" Hello new batteries!

Seriously, this is the breakthrough that green technology like solar needed in order to store the energy produced. Bodes well for our future!

Now, if he could publish his results in a manner suitable for peer review..

Cold fusion was "announced" years ago too.
Turns out no one else could duplicate the results.

It's not news until independent labs can duplicate it.
It's not revolutionary until it can be produced in usable quantities.

And, a few researchers in Tehran, Iran are claiming a 100k superconductor, it looks like.

That's the closest that website gets to a proper peer-reviewed reference for that 250K superconductor

Talk with someone I know who knows this stuff
He says putting two known super conducting materials together might have resulted in a break through

But the practical applications are null because it uses thalium http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thallium
which he says will make you infertile, make your hair fall out, and kill you depending on level of exposure.
So its a material that only grad students get exposed to and not likely to see wide spread use.
But its cool nonetheless

Ah

Should've actually looked at the formula...
