Having been a TA here and there, I can tell you the feeling you get from explaining things in different ways until they click with people who are having a tough time understanding something is very satisfying. So I can see the attraction with teaching at any grade.

I'll grant that teachers have plenty of reasons to hate their jobs, yet they stick around.

i dunno i think there's some noble worth in teaching. someone has to do it! and i'd rather like to think that some people are genuinely interested in pedagogy and in teaching. i for one definitely appreciate the professors of mine that are here to deliver engaging lectures and stimulating seminar discussions, as well as ones that are here merely to get their research done and further their own careers. and i think kid's teachers do a really hard job. how does "if you can't do, teach" apply to high-school teachers? engineering and architecture snobbery has no validity. i place a very high value on good teachers-- they're inspiring far beyond just getting a good test mark.

Throughout school, I've had good and bad teachers. Each were memorable in their own way. Some were so good at and enthusiastic about what they did that they've had a lasting impact on the way I think. I could see myself going back to college for an education degree if I ever got tired of what I'm doing now.

People who hate teaching shouldn't be teaching. Of the teachers I've had, the best were the ones who enjoyed their work.

dilbert is being a grade a fucking mong in this thread. some of the most talented, bright and charismatic people i know have gone into teaching. one of my best friends from my class has gone into postgraduate certificate of education-- because he wants to give something back, and wants to inspire people with that which he was inspired when he was a student. it's not for a lack of talent at all. what takes talent if teaching doesn't? making money in a corporate environment? lol. of all the people i've met the office drones were the most frustrated.

I don't know, teaching eight year olds something I learned when I was eight, doesn't really seem that inspiring.

I don't know any teacher who doesn't hate their job with a passion.

yeah seriously dilderp, if it wasn't for teachers you'd probably be eating your own feces while yelling incomprehensible sounds like a troglodyte

what is it with this forum's engineers thinking they have god's gift of genius and that every other path in life is useless, and that their own accomplishments are from pure god-given talent?

So what? The least talented people I've known have gone into teaching, generally because its their last and only option.
Someone who may seem like a 'talented' teacher generally wouldn't cut it in the real world, whats impressive is seeing a real world talented person teach - you don't see it very often.

Typically
- They have no marketable skills
- They have commitments and need a steady and easy income with a pension at the end of it
- They want a cushy job where they don't have to work hard or stretch themselves

I'm not doing it, good luck to those who do.

I include a good number of engineering lecturers in the above rant.

all the people I know who wanna go into teaching are doing it because they genuinely want to help people learn, because they know the value of a good teacher.

A few of the teachers at my high school used to practice law before deciding to teach. They didn't graduate from some podunk JD mill either.
