I always seem to be out of HDD space and my file server is out of space for more HDDs too. Already had to ghetto something together for 4 of the drives. So I've been thinking.

Pick up 2 of these
Fill one up with 1.5TB drives, fill the other up with 1TB drives. I'm choosing those HDD sizes because I already have a couple of 1 and 1.5TB drives. The Lian-Li enclosure looks high quality enough. Has a 140mm fan for keeping everything cool.

Run RAID 5 on each of the enclosures. So I'd have a 6TB array (4x1.5TB + parity disk) and a 4TB array (4x1TB + parity disk). Then span one large partition over both arrays for a total of one 10TB partition. There won't be anything really important on there. Just a bunch of media and such. Still, I'd be protected against a drive crapping out.

Are there any problems with windows when it comes to disks that large? I'd probably be using Server 2008 R2 Standard.

Yes? No?
For future reference, what does something like those set you back?  And how hard is it to configure?  I have ~9-10TB of media atm with 0 backup   Though I've been pretty successful in predicting drive failure and getting everything off in time so far

we're a netware outfit, cutting over to M$. what i've seen so far, is 4 tb in array - no reason i can see that it won't scale . . .
Great.

I might have read it wrong... but if you stripe the drives for a total of 10TB you wouldn't be proctected since a stripe works kinda lika a chain.. if a join breaks, the entire chain goes....
No. If a disk dies, the RAID 5 will be able to rebuild it. If another disk in the other array dies, its RAID 5 can also rebuild it. If 2 disks die simultaneously in the same array, I'm fucked. But if I want to protect against that I'd need to shell out way more. Not worth it for a couple of HD movies and porn. I have a 500GB RAID1 array + offsite backup for my important data

Enclosures are $250 each, a 1TB disk is $99, a 1.5TB disk is $119. Although prices outside of switzerland will probs be a bit lower.

Yeah, HDDs are cheaper here.  What about difficulty of setting them up?  MS Server should be fairly straightforward right?

Should be no problem. Disk management, new partition, done

Got the tubing today. Tygon 16/12,7mm. Rad changed to beefier XSPC 360. BTW is it ok to use Nickel plated EK supreme lt in same loop with regular copper acetal block? I ordered the nickel one through mistake.

Bought two Samsung Spinpoint F3 drives today.

Short stroked them to 100GB each and put them in RAID0, will post benchmarks soon

Using only the first 100GB of each disk.

Also, I get up to 260MB/s read

Also, I'm expecting a third F3 soon.

I'm getting faster than SSD for 1/5th of the price for equal size.

Solid state drives aren't really about raw, sequential throughput. There's not really any challenge in matching SSD sequential read throughput with traditional drives for a lower price.

What 1TB external HDD should I get... I was going to get a WD My Book Essential but are there better options for a similar price?

Have I got a deal for you then.

I have a 18GB IDE harddrive that makes a lot of noise and it comes in an external enclosure. Still works! And you don't even have to reformat because I don't have anything on it!

Bah, who cares!? It still connects with USB 2.0

C'mon, I know someone wants it. $500. Helluva deal. I'll even throw in the enclosure for free!

Yeah, except I need one this weekend (cbf explaining lol) and I'm only using it with my laptop so eSATA isn't a necessity (since my laptop doesn't have eSATA), but if it came bundled, it would be a bonus
