So i want to try the asus p5e mod, but i dont know how to make a bootable cd. help?
Does that mean security experts don't use AV?Defiance wrote:
Yet, no computer security expert worth his salt will ever advise such action. If you ever download a file, torrent something, or plug a flash drive in to your computer, you ought to have an AV program..Sup wrote:

Finray, if you think AVG is too intrusive (I did as well), I suggest using Avast.
Maybe even security experts play it smart and don't use AV....Sup wrote:

Yeah it just scans for viruses and shit and if you want to remove it you need an AVKing_County_Downy wrote:
That won't actually cure the virus unless you purchase it.Finray wrote:

You can use nero or any decent CD/DVD burning utility to create bootable disks. Just select BOOT/BOOTABLE/something similar from the CD type list instead or regular data. You don't have to burn the BIOS or utility to the CD, just put them under a short drive path like C:\ so you find them easily.

Oh, so your solution to the intrusiveness of the occasional update is to scan everything you download with an online scanner that isn't even worth the time it takes to load the page? And then, when you do get a virus, you'll go through the trouble of installing it?Finray wrote:

Your world confuses me.
Aha ha ha...Finray wrote:
This.. I've been AV free for about two years. If you're anywhere near tech-savvy then you realise what'll have viruses in it..Sup wrote:

I now enjoy being able to use my computer when I start it, rather than having to wait for AVG to update first.
If you're anywhere near "tech-savvy" as you say, you'll know that an AV program is no trouble and does more good than bad. I'd never own a PC without AV software on it (Preferably Avast). That's just stupid.
You should know that threats aren't only in the form of downloads.
And even if you really feel there's no need for AV software, it really doesn't hurt to have one anyway and spend 5 minutes configuring it so it doesn't bother you and just let it do it's job in the background.

I run without. I install one every third month or so just for good measure. Each and every time, they come up with a couple of tracking cookies, and that's it.FFLink wrote:

So yeah, I see no point in having an anti-virus program choke my machine by checking everything.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
CommonSense is Jihad aka 12/f/taiwan and he is a noob at computers so I'm not so sure about that .Sup..Sup wrote:

I have used AV since F-PROT on a floppy running under DOS. Something like AVG doesn't choke anything decent these days when its properly setup. Anything dual core and still complaining about AVG making PC choke should look in the mirror what is the problem really.

All that 'live protection' makes things go noticeably slower. Checking every file that gets opened is just bound to do that.GC_PaNzerFIN wrote:

Seems logical to me, rather than having nothing at all...

I had a neighbor years ago ask me to help him out with his machine and he had that on there..

The whole "I don't use AV because I'm cool" thing is just an argument for full-of-themselves nerds like Freezer and Sup to show off their mad computer skillz and how awesome they are.GC_PaNzerFIN wrote:
