Building a new computer would be fun. Unfortunately it would be a waste of money. There aren't any games worth playing anymore. I mean at least there aren't that require new hardware to do so.
i felt like i was saying the exact same thing here 5 years ago. i can’t justify paying the crypto-spiked price for a GPU so that i can play fortnite or whatever. i’m basically waiting for blizzard to relaunch vanilla WoW, a game i could max the settings of comfortably a decade ago.

WoW is the biggest subscription MMO in the world. how is this news to you? i haven’t played it since 2010/11. blizzard recently announced they are relaunching a ‘classic’ version of the original game. i shall be replaying it. it’s an instant wormhole into being 15 again.

i noped out around wrath of the lich king. raid finder and heroic classes were stupid. all the cross-realm conveniences made socialising and community irrelevant. everyone could see the way the game was heading towards a single-player trophy cabinet. but i have very fond memories of the cohesive mmo world feeling previous to that. it’s the sort of gaming community you don’t find anymore in streaming and esports culture.
can’t pretend i’m going to play it a lot or like it as much. but i’m glad it’s being revived. incidentally a book published by a vanilla wow developer just raised the highest ever sum on kickstarter for a book. a lot of people feel the same way.

yeah. i keep in touch with some of my old mmo buddies (from eq2 though, not wow). it's fun to occasionally remember "old times" with them. none would be willing to invest as much of their life as we used to in an online game again though.uziq wrote:

I was thinking of just buying the cheapest hardware on Amazon just to get the the feeling of building a PC again. You could build a whole decent internet/writing PC for the price of a single gaming grade CPU. Which is a problem with PC gaming today too. I can't stomach dropping $1500 on a PC just to Max out whatever is popular out there right now? Fortnight, Battlefield whatever? Nah.
you don’t really even need a current gen CPU really. as always with these things it’s like CPU designs outstrip game utilisation by about 3 generations.
the shocker is the fact even mid-range GPUs are priced through the roof because of demand. RAM seems to be surprisingly expensive, too. i think it’s probably the first time in my life where i’d feel more disposed to buy a current-gen console and forget a custom-build PC.
that’s not even to mention the latest must have gimmick monitors or whatever. 400hz or something and horrible colour/image quality. but the frame sync bro!!!!! now you’re expected to drop $1000 to get s good all round monitor too. i’m sure those twitch browser tabs look fantastic.

SSD's are getting cheaper at least. I bought a 250 GB for like a hundred dollars a few years back. Same model goes for $50ish today. That is one cool advancement.

My sister's boyfriend brother bought him a high end gaming PC as a gift. He plays it as my sister's place on a 50 inch Samsung 4K T.V. The games he plays? Age of Empires 2 and some mmo with elves. I don't have the heart to tell him his brother wasted a ton of money on him. I mean this PC is way more powerful than mine and I don't even need it.

Thank you! I plan to play nothing. In fact the PC is a downgrade in every way to my old one. I put Linux Mint on the computer and want nothing to do with games for at least a generation.

What CPU did you pair it with?
I already had a 8th gen i5-8400.
Somehow on my network, my new computer is getting 4-5 Mbps speeds whereas it's supposed to be around 25-30 (still shitty, I know). I'm using an old ethernet cable I've had for years (and was the same one as my old PC). Is it possible the shitty cable is causing it to be slow or is there some other likely cause? I don't have a wireless card to hand to troubleshoot with.
absolutely is possible. do you have a router that may be a bottleneck, or are you connected straight to the cable modem/gateway?
