Thinking about getting an Acer Predator-series monitor with part of my tax refund.  27" of 1440p monitor refreshing at 144hz with G-Sync so you actually get see every frame your GPU is able to produce and don't have to deal with Vsync stuttering or dropping to 30 anymore.

The only problem seems to be the QC at the factory so you might have to do a couple RMAs to get one without backlight bleeding but other than that, everybody who has a good one seems to love it

A middle-of-the-road Acer monitor I bought years ago for the office is still running great. My high-end 25.5" Asus, a younger screen than the Acer, currently has end-of-life capacitors and takes about three minutes to charge properly, after which I have to turn it off and back on again to get rid of color garbling. I suppose the point is no matter what you buy, it has the potential of being a thorn in your backside.

The monitor you linked to is an IPS. I notice newegg didn't list its response time, but I've found 4ms on an Amazon review, which is pretty nice for IPS. I dunno, do you need a $700 monitor?

e: reminder - Gsync for Nvidia cards, Freesync for AMD.

I don't think anybody really needs a $700 monitor other than people who need as much graphical clarity as possible for their job but I've been looking to upgrade monitors at some point and this is one of the best ones for gamers.  I also love me some high quality textures where graphics are concerned, so 1440p should be amazing.  Everybody who has Gsync says how amazing it is not to have Vsync stuttering, adding latency or otherwise causing performance drops.  And I have a GTX 970 so I will definitely be able to use it.  Acer has a Freesync model of the previous generation of this monitor for a few hundred bucks less with the option of TN for $450 or IPS for $550.

ASUS actually has a direct competitor to the monitor I'm looking at but they've been known to have worse QC issues with these high-end monitors than Acer has with theirs.  Both of the LCD monitors that I've owned since 2009 have been Acers and both were great.  The first one had some issues with the power button but my current one has been flawless and color on IPS looks amazing.

My PC wouldn't boot and it's now on the second time of running startup repair. It's been "repairing disk errors" for over an hour, fingers crossed.
I don't have a windows disk...

Sounds like you might need a new hard drive and a Windows 10 ISO and then you can access your old hard drive as a data drive once you have everything installed on the new drive

Might even want to go SSD this time, they're pretty cheap now depending on size: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-inch-So … ds=EVO+500

Yeah don't really wanna spend that much.
how about this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-ST1000D … hard+drive

Um or i could maybe go for the 250g version of what you linked

I have 1Tb external for storage and my current 500g one I could use for a bit even if it is on its way out

I haven't used an SSHD before so I couldn't say for sure but everybody reviewing it seems to like it and Seagate is a better brand than most others.  I prefer Western Digital myself but their drive didn't have any reviews and it says the magnetic part spins at 5400RPM which sounds bad to me, but I have no idea how reliant SSHDs are on the spinning speed for performance

Um yeah the Seagate one is 7200rpm which is a bit better.
Not really sure what to do, its between a 250gb SSD or probably the Seagate hybrid.

Edit : screw it, cant wait and not too fussed about the improved loading of an SSD so just bought the hybrid, if my current drive is dying I'l just need to buy another HDD anyway so...

Hybrid drives that are 5400 are garbage. Don't go with them.

At this point, unless you're really on a budget or in a hurry just go with solid state, they're cheap enough now. Get a 120gb one for your OS and other important crap and keep your backups/media on normal 7200 (or hybrid-7200) drives.

The one I got is a hybrid 7200. Just wanna get my PC back up and running, the old HDD like most of the system is like 5+ years old, got a birthday coming up so I might do an upgrade then, and maybe get a SSD then.

If you have a need to go with a normal 7200 drive that obviously fine, but if you want to upgrade or buy a new comp or anything along those lines, yeah it's time for solid state.

I thought they sounded bad.  The system would probably run great until you have a cache miss and then it would have to seek and read from one of the slowest types of hard drive that you could possibly buy.

Which is the main reason, I went for the Seagate, a 7200rpm hybrid is certainly going to be faster then my now dead/dying Hitachi deskstar 7200rpm which was made and been in constant since late 08, early 09. And I've doubled capacity.

Hybrid drives in general sound like a QC nightmare. All the more subcomponents to have fail on you.

ASUS also has a reputation for having borderline-cheatsy little features like that crosshair toggle. Apart from being conditionally unsportsmanlike, even if its use doesn't result in anything like a VAC ban, the gaming taboo currently tied to things like this make it not worth the trouble. This isn't the 90's anymore where you can join a cheat server to pit hacks against hacks. Gone are the days where you can fearlessly turn off your brain for a solo power trip. No, we now have single player achievements that can result in massive flak (looking at Blizzard's draconian customer service) if you so much as look at one with a custom cheat activated.

Pfft.

The Acer I got has that crosshair too lol.  I haven't actually bothered with it yet though. If I do, it'll be just to see what it looks like

The performance is actually better than I thought I was going to get despite having ~70% increase in pixel count.  And even in the games where I lost some considerable performance on paper, it actually still runs smoother because of Gsync.  As long as you're above 30 FPS, it looks buttery crystal clear smooth, there's no stuttering or hitching or screen-tearing, it just runs and it runs great.  I can see why people say they'd never go back after trying this monitor.

XCOM and Tomb Raider unfortunately took a big enough dip in performance to be unplayable without changing some settings but most other games still look amazing and play better on the same high-ish or maxed settings.

The newer the game, generally the better it looks.  Certain somewhat older games like Max Payne 3 have to upscale textures with some looking more stretched out than others but generally still looking very good, also pre-rendered cutscenes in certain games that looked indistinguishable from real-time in-game graphics in 1080p now look noticeably shittier when upscaling to 1440p.  But newer games that are already 4K-optimized like GTA V look absolutely incredible now on High-Very High settings with 4x MSAA and I still get 30-45 FPS everywhere according to the benchmark.

Life Is Strange is obviously not very strong in the texture department no matter what, but the terrible aliasing it had that constantly irked me is entirely eliminated now at 1440p.

At first I wasn't sure about this one but now I think it was totally worth it

So about this Apple vs FBI thing...

Uh does anyone think Apple really doesn't have a backdoor into their own devices? It is hard to believe a $235 billion dollar a year company doesn't have a way to get into their own devices. I'm not sure why Apple thinks this is a hill to die on. The people who really care about security don't use apple phones, they use android. Seems ridiculous to combat the FBI. Especially by a so called American company.

Of course they have a back door, the FBI is asking them to open a back door to every device in the future and give it to the FBI - who will of course look after it and not leak it to anyone else.

Yes, it is worth fighting for. Good for Apple.
