I hope 580s get a little more reasonable now...I might add a second if the price is ever right.
I only see the 680's for sale right now. With a 2600K, I can hardly do much better than the 2.5GB 570 I already have. Maybe next build, if 7x0's aren't out.

Between Skyrim and Diablo 3 (and BF3, if I ever get around to it), I can't think of any reason a 680 would specifically help me out over the 570.

For some reason my computer won't recognize the cable modem. I just moved. Plugged cable modem to router, router to computer. I'm typing this on my phone, which is taking a signal from the router wirelessly. But my computer won't connect.

Fixed IP?  Tried a hard reset?  Back in the day when I had cable modem, I had to call support to get things fully working again.  Happened every month.  So, I just went with DSL.  Never had to deal with support again.

Edit:  you are getting wifi and full internet access via the phone?

Full wifi and internet access on my phone. Tried power cycling both and reset the cable modem. If I plug directly from computer to cable modem it works fine. The modem is only a single port though, and my roommate wants a wired connection too

Modem used to work fine?  IP addresses match?   All 192.168.1.x or such.   I use 192.168.2.x.   DHCP setup?

time for a switch.
you may have to call support and have the modem registered, you might be on a different circuit than the one you used to live on . . .

Oh, is the cable modem just a cable modem?  Does it also function as a router?

Nope, just a cable modem

The only thing I kept is the router. Modem is a new one the installer brought yesterday, so i imagine the Mac is registered. DHCP.

It doesn't make sense that I connect directly to the modem and it works fine, but when I go from modem to router to PC, no connection.

From network and sharing center on windows 7- 'your broadband modem is experiencing connectivity issues.' the solution according to them is to power cycle/reset, which Ive done

Is DHCP turned on in both the modem and router?

Actually, it does make sense.  Common "noob" issue really.

PC IPV settings hard set?  PC network settings set to Obtain IP address Automatically?  DNS Server address automatically?  When connected directly to modem, what does your PC IP show?  What are the routers IP when you log into the router?

Edit:  You have DHCP on the modem?  Then turn it off on the router.  Or the other way around.

I personally prefer DHCP on my router, and not on a router enabled modem.  I have so many things connected on my network that I occassionally get IP conflicts, since I have several fixed IP's (port forwarding, DMZ's for Open XBox NAT connections), so it's much quicker to just restart the router or the errant switch or extra access point.

How do I check/do any of what you listed?

To check your IPv4 settings
Open the Network and Sharing Center either from the control panel or right click on the network icon in the task bar.

Click Change adapter settings on the left side of the window.

Right click on the enabled Local Area Connection and click Properties

From the list, highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click the Properties button.

By default, both IP and DNS should be on automatically if your modem or router is running DHCP.

To check your IP when connected to the modem
Open a command prompt and type ipconfig /all

Under Local Area Connection, there should be an address next to IPv4 address

Router's IP
The address that you type into your web browser to access the control panel of the router. eg. 192.168.0.1

All that stuff is on.

Ip address. 76.174.1201.1

Router address: 192.168.2.1

How do I turn DHCP off on the modem?
FFLink
There is.

Access the router, should show up as "Default Gateway" in the CMD prompt. Log in with the user and pass (Usually provided on the base of the router) and find it in the settings. Try to assign your PC a static IP. Will probably need your MAC address (Found in the ipconfig /all bit).

Then when it's off, open CMD and type "ipconfig /release" then "ipconfig /renew".

Ninite is excellent. I've built half a dozen computers for friends/family recently and its a massive time saver. Ninite + a version of office and installing programs is done. Anything extra is their problem.

Is it possible to install to a hard drive other than C: with Ninite?

So I had an 8800 GTS that killed its self when it got too dusty...

I don't really play PC games anymore, and am broke so I just went and got a GeForce GT 430.
Was surprised to see it didn't even need a power cable.

Is this card better then my old one? I realize its low end, but is this a case of low end new being better then old budget performance?

Depends what version of the 8800GTS you had. Performance may be similar or a little worse. 8800GT > GT240 > GT430 so depending which GTS version you have it will fit somewhere around the 8800GT mark and probably performs better than the GT430.
