Need help plox!

I've got a 5 year old laptop (Dell Inspiron 6000 - Those ones EVERYBODY had) and I recently turned it on but just after the POST screen I got a message, "Unable to load operating system"

I googled and it seems this happens after installing the OS, not a year after I put win7 on it.

WTF? It happened once before and I restarted and thought it was a fluke and it didn't happen again for 3 or 4 months but now it has again and a simple restart won't fix.

Corrupt HD?

Did you even TRY to do a windows repair / safe mode / re-install?

But the asshole I bought this from on ebay decided he wanted to charge extra on postage so I told him where to go and got a refund.

So I bought this instead.

DO WANT! My x52 bit the dust a while ago and that hotas warthog is sexy.
It's a bit expensive, but worth it considering the amount of time I've spent playing DCS - A10.

I can't even get that far.

There's no chance of booting into safemode or anything. It just says that after the POST screen. Windows can't even start to try to load. Whatev I'm gonna write zeros on the entire drive and reinstall

You do know that the discs you are going to use for said "re-install" have windows repair?

You do know that safe-mode is chosen before the windows boot splash appears?

How is he supposed to install drivers when he can't boot?

yikes guys chill

well it worked now. Not from anything anybody did or said (thanks anyway! ) But apparently telling my comp to "fuck off" when it wouldn't start for the 5th time sometimes works.

I did a chkdsk and some stuff came up and fixed but I'm not going to trust it forever. I've got 2 thumb drives standing by, one with some freeware wiping/writing zeros program and one with bootable win7.

Christ I haven't used a disk to install windows since XP. Everything has been .iso's for me. (Legally through my school mind you)
I failed to mention this though so I do apologize.

Herp. It was RIGHT after the POST screen. Before anything could even consider thinking about maybe transferring to windows for its takeover. Which is why I asked if it had something to do with the HD.

So those of you that dont know about it - Canada basically is going back 15 years into the past with internet services as of a few days ago.  We really only have 2-3 providers depending on the area with smaller 3rd party resellers giving service as well.  Now the providers are able to charge by bandwidth, making the base of most contracts about 25-30GB/month from 250GB.  Since its obviously bullshit everyone is pissed off, its a scam to use their internet and tv services.

So any Canadians (or anyone else for that mater) sign this

Welcome to Australia!

It was only really in 2010 did we start seeing cap increases. We can now get 100GB+ caps! You're paying triple digits a month tho.

.... Or if you go with some derp fest -- you can get more for less but you get onpeak and off peak quotas. That is 7am - midnight is on peak (40GB) and midnight to 7am off peak (80GB)

..... Or if you're lucky enough to live dead heart of the city, you can get cheapish internet -- 40-60 bucks a month for ADSL2. --

--OUr government is now rolling out fiber. But i can just see the prices of that being ridiculous.
everything i write is a ramble and should not be taken seriously.... seriously.

Yeah, but you guys didnt have unlimited and high caps at one point, then get them taken away for ridiculously low caps and increased prices.  At least Australia is (slowly) progressing.  Apparently its in Canada's best interest to regress to the 90s.  Residential fiber isnt even a consideration at this point.  Apparently there have been no significant improvements to our network in 5-10 years, just maintenance... Stupid monopolies.  We seriously need to allow American ISPs into Canada, with 90% of our population very close to the border it would actually be quite profitable for them.  Plus we would get real internet for once

i know for a fact shaw is laying fiber in all their green (read: new) developments.  Both Rogers and Shaw are moving heavily towards docsis 3.0 too.  Perhaps it's just a minor speed bump in the development of a faster network?

Are they local or long haul lines? Fiber is used in all HFC cable networks. The more the merrier. You can't realistically build a cable network without it these days.

It would still be symptomatic of how terrible an idea it can be to have monopolies of any kind, natural or regulated, in the service provider world. DOCSIS 3.0 is a drop-in upgrade with only slight modifications in even average quality cable networks, and these providers have had years to implement it. Chances are that either they were indifferent, and sat back twiddling their thumbs while providers in competitive markets upgraded their CMTS deployments, or they genuinely don't have the networks to support it, meaning that they've built their networks to bare minimum specification because they didn't have to worry about being competitive in the future. They used to cite cost as a limiting factor to upgrading, but it's not like these MSOs are exactly strapped for cash, and lower-margin providers in competitive markets have found the money to do it already.

Shaw only exists on the west coast so doesnt really help 75% of Canada.

Also, all of the ISPs here have heavy, heavy limiting on pretty much everything.  Torrent ports have obviously been limited for ages, but so have VPN and SSH connections.  Its utter bullshit.

The only competition the major ISPs had (Bell and Rogers) was these third party resellers since they could offer unlimited and high caps.  But now that they've knocked them out of business there is absolutely no competition whatsoever, so we're destined to have the same third-world internet for a lot longer.
