Should I have the GF pick me up a Nexus S while she's in New York? Anything better out there? We don't have 4G here. No iphone. Already have too much apple hardware and especially iOS devices.
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Maybe some of you more knowledgeable chaps can comment on this, but I'm a little confused. My HP 2140 (Atom N270) is slow as shit basically, but I just enabled dual core in the BIOS and it seems a little happier playing YouTube videos, which it struggled on before. I thought it was a single core though? Is this a placebo effect or will that have enabled something (HT?) that will make it run a little better?

EDIT: Interesting, a second processor has shown up in the system monitor now. I assume its HT so maybe it does help out a little. Thinking back, I think at the time I installed Ubuntu I was required to disable the dual core bit in order to let it boot off a USB stick or something like that.

It is HT. You still won't get any great performance. Atom is slow, and the GMA950 doesn't help either. Nor does the slow HDD.

As for WP7, is that even on a comparable level? What I saw from the reviews is that it's a promising platform but still lacking in comparison to the more mature iOS and Android.

I spent about an hour with WP7 in a shop, without listening to the wanker assistants trying to sell it to me and I was impressed.

There is no phone that does email/contact/message/live feed integration better than WP7. The email on it is just sooo beautiful. Everything about using the email system is just perfect. The live feed with contacts and images and number and most used contacts is incredibly useful and easy to get used to. Typing is better than android.

I honestly think it's one hell of a buy if you can get it. I loved using it and was really impressed by it. I would buy one if I could afford it.

Depends what you want to use the 60gb for.

It will be the primary or secondary drive, etc

Well if you're not using Windows 7, it's pretty pointless booting from it.

And the write cycles are limited, so don't expect to fill that drive with 58gb and think you're sweet. Try to limit the amount of shit that's on the drive to the OS and programs you know you'll use often. Problem with using it for games is that you're likely to uninstall or never play them that often in which case you'd be better to use a standard hdd.

Max, WP7 is like Zimmer said - a dream. But I think given the updated version of Android (2.3 aka Gingerbread) I would go with Android (I am somewhat biased, though). The platform is more mature and Google pushes out updates to the Nexus phones instantly whereas with most other devices (aside from the iPhone) you have to wait for carrier updates. In Europe this thankfully isn't the problem that it is in the USA. I don't think WP7 would also suffer from this, but if you get a Nexus phone, it's guaranteed to not be a problem at all. Google bypasses the carrier entirely with its updates.

I think the best question you can ask yourself is this: Do you use Microsoft's various cloud services the most or do you use Google's? Whichever service you use the most, get the phone that goes with that to make the experience the most seamless.

Guess that makes sense. I'll get the gf a wp7 phone. She uses facebook and windows live a lot. The integration is something that'll appeal to her. I'll get an android phone. I hardly use facebook, but I love to tinker with stuff. I'll enjoy having all those nerdy apps available.

Good idea. If you can have both, that's the best. My girlfriend is deciding between an iPhone and an Android phone at the moment, but she has until April to make that decision, heheh. Do be sure to post what you think of the Nexus S overall, I'm not sure if I want to buy one next time I am home in Feb or wait for Honeycomb...

Updates really aren't a problem if you're a geek like we are though. Blackberry is terrible at pushing updates as it all goes through the carriers, but I can easily just go on the internet, download the latest update and shove it on my BB.

I think it's slightly unfair to say that Google possesses the upper hand here merely due to updates.

Also, gmail and the sort integrate perfectly with WP7. That's my main interest. I don't use any hotmail services but the email system works with any service and it just looks fantastic.

I'd love both an Android and WP7 phone... but until recently Android just wasn't on a usability par with most other phones (great to tinker with and stuff, but it still lagged and lacked easy to use features). Now with the Gingerbread update I'm kicking myself as to why I went for a BB.

Hopefully with WP7, Microsoft will try and update it regularly to catch up with Android and the iPhone. They managed to do the same sort of thing with Xbox, so they know what they're doing.

On some carriers with Android phones, you still have to wait for the carriers to authorise updates.

I don't think O2 do it, but I don't know, really. I just update when it tells me to.

Zimmer: What features were you missing in Android that you had to have (and thus forced you to get a BB)? Just quite curious what exactly for my own personal knowledge. I honestly don't see any real lag on my phone at all and I'm using an older HTC Magic with the latest 2.2.1 update that Google/Vodafone finally pushed to the devices. I know the Motorola Milestone had a lot of issues, but then it was also using a custom ROM that Motorola developed. All of the HTC Sense phones seemed to be tiptop (all my friends have a Milestone or one of the HTCs).

The issue with updates, however, is that the updates come OTA. It isn't like BB or iOS where you can/have to download the update via your computer and then to your phone. Android does it all in the cloud. HTC does sometimes put their ROMs up on their site where you can use their flashing software and do it yourself, but I think this is more the exception than the rule (I'm not even sure if HTC does this anymore, I know they did with the HTC Magic and the Hero).

FFLink: It depends on what phone you're using. The problem is that all of the manufacturers are running custom versions of Android so when a new version drops, they have to make sure their interface works with the latest version of Android before they can push the update to customers. Then if you have a carrier that is really afraid of updates (for whatever reason) like Verizon Wireless in the USA, then you have an even longer wait time. That's why I say go with vanilla Android whenever you can, especially now that Gingerbread has come out. HTC Sense is nice, but certainly not a necessity (for me).
