sometimes whitish/gray solid screen when i turn it on.. fixed by turning it off and then back on
or slow refresh epileptic type for the first few minutes its on(that i see)
is this normal
mine went this way too, power-supply/caps in the back are going most likely...

does it also make a high-pitch whining noise? it might start to do that as the caps wear away...

they seem to have a short lifespan mine only lasted about 3yrs of heavy use

Well my samsung monitor makes kinda high pitched noise. Haven't had time to RMA it yet, better do so soon.

That's actually a quite decent statistic. Most barely make three years of light use.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Is it really worth splashing out an extra £17 for an Asus AMD 870 board instead of a Gigabyte AMD 770 one? Bearing in mind, I don't care for overclocking or any of that and none of my components are going to be top spec, this is a thoroughly mid range PC with a budget in mind.

What factors do I need to take into consideration

Also, another question. Is Crysis still the most demanding/graphically impressive game out there, STILL? I swear it's like ten years old now. Surely something else has come out there that notoriously cripples PC's (and cripples them for a good reason, not just because they're badly made, even though apparently Crysis was also badly made)

Battlefield Bad Company 2 runs at a forth of the speed of Crysis on my computer.

This one has lasted since 2006 and thru several moves/changing display types to IPS for better color with photos. perhaps this is my new baby http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/7 … n_LCD.html :joy:

My 2 year old samsung monitor has always emitted a high pitched noise

it had better last, I don't want to spend 400+ euros on a monitor every 2-3 years

I think you can thank the consoles for that...

Untill the next generation of consoles come around, the amount of developers developing games that push the envelope on PC will be small thanks to every major publisher caring more about money than the games they sell

So anyone got an answer to my mobo question? Screw spending an extra 17 quid on that new 800 series mobo, save that for booze

Dunno if it's an error on their part, but the local Microcenter currently has i7 950s for $199.95.

mine also whined when it was off/in standby... didn't whine when displaying a picture fine

it's the caps in your power-supply going. you could try a maintenance store/fix but it's most likely an RMA (warranty depending) or replacement.

Was typing a paper when windows update caused a reboot. Upon reboot computer windows didnt load, there is just a black screen. Attempts to repair startup and use system restore have failed, now all my restore points have been deleted . .

Some overclocking, nevermind the notepad saying fanboy, it was required in uploads to certain competition as proof the shots were taken now.

You can replace monitor power-supply pretty cheaply.  At least around here.
research shows lcd's have changed alot since 2006. i doubt the samsung has a warranty that long? switching to IPS display for graphics work. thx
