My uncle wants to upgrade from his Celeron P4 and I've got an E5400 build layed out. Is AMD any cheaper when it comes to e-mail/internet PCs? He wants the spend the least amount possible. Needs CPU/Mobo/RAM/HDD only
At least back when I built my HTPC, a cheap Intel build would be about the same as a cheap AMD build, except the Intel machine was twice as fast.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
true. AMD is really only worth looking at (from my experience) if you're buying slightly higher end stuff.Freezer7Pro wrote:

Even then Intel beat them at every price point.CapnNismo wrote:

(unless you want 6 weak cores).

I wouldn't necessarily say that. The processors themselves might be better on Intel side, but some of the motherboards you can get for AMD cores are pretty stout for almost nothing in comparison to their Intel counterparts at the same price.
Intel it is then. $208 for E5400, Asus P5KPL-AM mATX motherboard, 2GB DDR2 Kingston RAM, WDC Blue 160GB HDD.
I thought we were talking processors, not motherboards?
Anyway, is bulldozer going to be the same socket? Cause if not, then it'd better be fucking good and worth upgrading for. The only reason AMD has a market atm in my opinion is cause you can go from a crappy old X2 to a X6 on the one mobo.

Actually, you often can't. Neither of my AM2 machines will eat anything above a 6000+. Since those old chipsets are very cheap today, even many modern machines can't.Finray wrote:

I'm thinking about buying a PS3
Quick guys, talk me out of it!
Pros:
- Best gamepad ever made
- A few good exclusive titles I won't be able to play on my PC (Tekken, GranTurismo, etc.)
- Playing from the couch/bed on my TV
Cons:
- Price (More expensive games, extra controllers etc. which will be near-useless when console is outdated)
- Current generation of console getting OLD
- Only have a 21" old-ish CRT TV
- Might turn out like my last console (N64 with 3 games & 1 controller)
- Helping kill PC gaming

It comes with a blue ray player.
It has no games.
It has free wifi
It doesn't use a points system for downloads so you know exactly how much you are buying something for
It has BBC iplayer
It can run linux OS so it can double up as a pc (not on the slim)
You can connect your psp to your PS3 and remotely access your PS3
Folding @ home helps find cures for diseases by using some of the PS3's processing power
Has a low failure rate. Red ring of death for example.
Lots of media support such as photos, videos and music.
Controllers charged by usb cable.
It has a browser.

(If you show an Xbox360 controller I'm gonna have to repost Reaper's pic)

The Playstation controller is horrific. The triggers have no feel to them and the sticks being put in the middle don't suit any game type at all (except maybe button mashing fighter games, but I'm not including those)

There is no controller that fits my hands that great, you can reach every button without having to move your hands...eskimo_sammyjoe wrote:
