Win Xp was my fav OS but it was outdated and thank God they made something better than Vista. I really like Windows 7, especially that it finds drivers by itself. Good job Microsoft.
It is now safe to turn off your computer.
I miss the turbo button.

Currently I've got an E8400 @ 3.0 GHz and an ATi 4770 that I've had for about 6 months. I'm thinking about upgrading. I definitely want to upgrade the video card, and a better processor would be nice, too. But I only want to spend about $400~$450, so would it even be worth it? Could I build a much better PC for $900~$1000 (i.e. I should just wait a few months and save up some more money)?
Also, I've got an E6750 and Radeon 3850 from before the upgrade 6 months ago. Should I try selling them on eBay? I imagine they're only worth $20 though And if I did upgrade, I'd have the 8400 and 4770 to sell, too. (I'm not one for hanging on to old parts and having 4 or 5 computers around).

Don't have any experience with OC'ing. And I'd probably have to fork out for better cooling since it's summer time here and I'm still using the stock heatsink/fan.
As for the card, how's a 5770 look? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814102873
Furthermore, does anyone know how compatible it will be with future cards in CrossFire? It'd be nice if when I build a whole new computer, I can use the 5770 in CrossFire instead of buying two whole new cards.
Better yet, would it be worth doubling the price for a 5850?
$320 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814102881
$290 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814150477
That extra $40 ($30 + shipping) worth the higher clock speeds?
I have a 500W PSU, so I'm limited by that. I also only have one 6-pin connector, but I'm pretty sure there are some 4-pins available that I can use with adapters (even though I'd prefer not to).

Matt, I'll buy your 4770. Name a price buddy. I could do with CFing it with my 4670
Seriously, wouldn't be worth the bother. Drivers would fuck you up, and end up giving you a very marginal difference in speed, but a massive load of microstuttering and bugs and crashes and things. Not worth it.CammRobb wrote:

Matt, I'd recommend getting a GTX 460, probably this one, very good cooler, reputable brand, 3 year warranty (4 year for another $25) and a steal for only $244 (over here the same card is £195, or $300).
In regards to your processor, E8400 is a really good, and you could probably squeeze out another .6Ghz from it and easily max out the 460, except on processor intensive games (BF:BC2, SupCom, etc). If you wanted a cooler I'd say the Freezer7Pro Rev2 is about the best bang for buck cooler you could get for dual cores. If you need any help check out this thread, and you can ask me on XFire if you need help
Just read that I'm going to have to get a nother GB or two of ram, and another HDD for college for coding.
i have a small question about windows 7, specifically the quick-launch icons...
my steam still has the small, blue/yellow shield for 'Run As Administrator' attached to it, permanently.
it's a small annoyance - i just want the steam icon! i don't have the icon attached to any other quick-launch program icon...
how do you remove it? ta

Try changing your "User Account Control Settings" in "User Accounts" in the Control Panel
or
Right click on the shortcut to Steam, on the Shortcut tab click Advanced. "Always run this program as an administrator"

nope, no luck
have it ticked to run as administrator in every single box and window that i can find it in.
have removed and repinned the icon... still has the annoying-ass shield!

Odd zeek, I've never seen the User Account Control since I turned it off permanently.
Done a reboot yet? Might need it to take effect.

You have to restart before changes to User Account Control take effect, fyi
I'm not really sure what else to try ... I've never even seen the shield appear on any of the icons on my taskbar before.
I presume that the program needs to be run as an administrator, so if you're not an administrator on your computer then it will always ask you to run the program as an administrator, and continue to notify you that you are running it as the administrator.
Try changing your account type? Although I would have thought you had already made yourself an administrator, during install ...

How queer, mines never had it but, I also never technically installed steam on Win7, I just kept the files from back on XP so that may have something to do with it.
This is how you remove the little shortcut arrow, but it might work for the shield too.
Windows + r
Regedit
Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile
Delete the IsShortcut registry value.
If that doesn't work then I think the shield only pops up when you have set some sort of permission, such as run as Admin, not too sure though. Try unchecking everything and running it normally.

i have restarted, multiple times.
fyi my version of win7 ultimate was an upgrade from vista, too (it kept all the steam files as before, no fresh installation).
it's a cracked version but i cannot see why this would affect anything... even microsoft genuine authentication was fooled.
fin i don't have that 'inkfile' in my class-root folder.

Does a UAC prompt appear when you launch Steam, zique?
My iPod Touch died before I even had the chance to put the brand new screen on that I purchased for it... fml.
Mine was a full format, not an upgrade (hate upgrades, always seem to fuck something up or just make a mess), your Steam is technically installed properly, mine is just some files sat on my E: drive.Uzique wrote:
