Just out of interest, what is the general consensus on the best manner in which to start this game and get to a good place in as swift a manner as possible?

Just about to re-install it.

Well I did the "Quick start" option, where you start with a Buster (M4) and a transport ship, and 100k credits. I bought ore from the Ore Belt, and sold it to weapons manufacturers in Argon Prime. When I had exhausted that area I took out some Pirates in the Paranid sectors (Priests Pity was good for this) to get my rep up so I could dock in their stations, and sold some more ore to the Paranid sectors weapons manufacturers. Then I went up to Menelaus's Frontier and collected the free ship there, and sold it. By this point I had 800k so I turned my transporter (which now has fully upgraded storage bay) into a sector trader, and it's currently trading in Home of Light. 8 hours gametime.

Doing the missions is a good way to get to grips with the game, and get the story. Not too great for making money.

To use a transport ship to buy stuff, either fly next to it, eject (shift + E) and get in your transport ship (when close enough, shift + E again) and then dock at stations and buy stuff, and sell it in places where it's price is higher.

Or you could use the command console. From your fighter ship (assuming you have a fighter/transport combo) go the the map (hotkey default ".") and select your transporter. Then click command console, then click Navigate, then click Dock At.. and select the station you want to buy from. Then dock at the station yourself, and click "Station" then "Ships". Click your transporter then select Trade with Station. You can then buy your items (Start with Energy Cells - buy at about 15/16, sell at about 18/19, poor profit, but you can do this many times) and they'll go into your transporter ship. To sell them find the station you want to sell to and do the same as above.

Somehow this doesn´t work for me. What´s the Command called in the options?
That command cannot be found in the options; already asked on the ES forums. It still works though:

default sector map view:

after pressing 'k':

you can even see your own ship on the sector map with max zoom (25600%):

Did you install anything else? Your game looks COMPLETELY different than mine
Anyways, I still can´t get it to work. If I hit 'k' (wether with shift or not) nothing happens. Meh. I´m still able to build half decent complexes though.

You´re playing Terran Conflict then?
Basically it´s like finny said. If you do the missions, it´s a good way to get into the basics of the game. To make real money, you´ll need to explore on your own though. At some point you´ll need better equipment and bigger ships to follow the story.
Try to get a hand on the trading computer and the ones who show you the best price for selling/buying in the sector. Makes live a whole lot easier.
Buy energycells at a maximum of 14. There should be enough plants in the starting sectors to get them constantly for 12 Credits. Sell them for at least 16. Buy them in "the Wall" and sell them in Argon Prime. Once you got yourself some Credits and a TS Transport, start buying Ore and Silicon in "Ore Belt" and sell the ore in "Cloudbase SE" and the Silicon in "Home of Light" "Cloudbase SW" or any other sector nearby. Be aware that the silicon market is saturated pretty quickly.
Mineral trading works good in "Emperor Mines" for buying and "Paranid Prime" for selling too. Quite some good profits in there.

My first factory was a Argon Farm in "Herrons Nebula" and after that a Silicon Mine in "Ore Belt". Racked up the Cr for building my first complex (now counting 12 Units) within three days.

Anyway did you drop an advanced satellite beforehand? Try default keyboard mapping or different keys while you're on sector map.

Hm, I just dropped a regular sattelite. That might be the reason. Maybe that´s what all teh talking about the video feed was about then...lol. Gotta try that.

Btw, I found an online complex planer which might come in handy:

More story, way more rockets, way more ships, new ship class (M7), more factions, systems and goods.
Mechanics are pretty much the same as in X3:R, but on a larger scale. So all the tips and such will apply to TC aswell, but you might start in a different system.

My second Boozecomplex is complete so far:

https://static.bf2s.com/files/user/26045/games/raumsprit_komplexII02.jpg

No powerplants, so energy cells need to be bought. Still makes a nice profit. Seems like there´s never enough booze in space
And I dropped an adv sattelite in this system and the view thingy worked (obviously ).

Get about 15 MKIII traders to work for you.
It will take you about a week of play to get enough money.
In the mean time you can hunt pirates, Xenon or Ka'ak. Do some mapping, get to analyze asteroïds, the list is almost infinite.

Started a game as broke pirate.  Did I get to the 50k credits crate in Ore Belt fast or not?
