Factories, hands down. But SecTraders do give some nice boost, especially when leveled up, so start them early. But factories (and later on complexes) always come first.

Best is to go with Quick Start, do the escort mission, then get your trading ship (which should be moored in Argon Prime) to go buy energy cells in Ore Belt, and sell them in Argon sectors, Prime, Cloud Base South-East and Home of Light are good places to sell.
