Look here first if you're tech savvy.

Well, as a result of the above thread I think it may be time for a new build. Any suggestions? I would like to go the route of DDR3. Unfortunately my computer is essential to my work so I can't really put this off to wait for DX11 cards unless they come out tomorrow or there is some kind of step-up program.

I only need the internal components, so no monitor, mouse, case, etc.

Thanks for the help.

Price range?  And what's it really for, you mentioned work but do you game on it or are you a console guy?

Since it is only for the internal components I'm aiming for no more than a $1000. I do a lot of graphic work, digital painting, web design, etc. It will also be used for gaming though. I would like it to be an adequate replacement/upgrade to my old system.

I don't need a hard driver either (see attached thread) although I did want to get another purely for backup. If I knocked that would it put an i7 with in that range (assuming it's the better choice)?

edit: I actually have a bunch of coupon codes for certain items from newegg, the i7 920 is one of them.

The i7 920 is 199.95 at microcenter... I have heard that the 920 has a slight edge and if the price is similar... the 920 i would pick...

I just built a q9400 based system and wish i had known the 920 was going to be only 200 a month later...lol
I am actually going to buy the 920 proc by itself soon and build a graphics only monster... no online... just rendering and graphics...
Windows 7 64 bit  8-12gb of ram and gtx 285/295 or ati 5000 series?
Love is the answer

Nice. I didn't even know there was a microcenter where I live, but there is according to the site.

Nope. If it works with the new build I guess I finally will, haha.

1792MB is waste, get one with 896MB.

edit: oh and good cooler too.

Not arguing your point as I'm sure you know more than me, but how is it a waste? Twice the memory for only a 30$ price difference seems like a good thing.

Can you recommend a good cooler that won't break the bank?

896MB is plenty for pretty much anything, it would seem. It's an unnecessary cost, as it is unlikely to have any real increase in ability. Spend the extra $ on a good cooler such as Mugen 2 or something(the $30 that would get you the card with more memory could almost get you a Mugen 2 on Newegg)

EDIT: Didn't notice the rebate on the 275. But is the 280 worth $15 more?

That 280 is also recertified and it doesn't have the discounted combo price when buying it with the motherboard.

Google: GTX 275 crash

I'm returning mine next week.

After 5-10 minutes in most games it will either freeze the computer or CTD.

Temps are fine, nothings over clocked, everything worked perfectly with my 8800 GTS 512

Or you could get it and just wait until drivers that work come out

Just put one in my friends new build and he's been playing it almost nonstop for the past week with no issues.

Mine has been playing steady since I got it a month ago, no problems at all.

Any tips for overclocking the i7? I never did it with my q6600 so I think I'd like to give it a shot this time around.

Panzer helped me, he'll be able to tell you what voltages to use(don't have time to get my volts to show you), it's a very very easy thing to do(with the right help). Throughout all the other forums I been on, I don't think I've seen an i7 that can't reach atleast 3.7Ghz.

1.25Vcore
1.275V QPI
1.12V IOH
1.82V PLL
1.64V Dram bus

21x multi
181 BCLK
=3.8GHz

Try these first. Keep an eye on the core temps while running prime95 with 8 threads. LinX doesn't work so well on i7, but you could do quick 10-20x run on it too.

If the 3.8GHz goes fine, put 191 BCLK which equals to 4GHz with 21x multiplier.

edit: you have evga board that has some settings with different name. feel free to ask if you have trouble finding them.
