As a parent I can say that school uniforms cost more than regular clothing that you can buy.  Secundo it does not really makes any kid different.  If a retard is born, he's born or brought up retarded.  Just to take an example on my oldest son.  He went at that public shool for 2 years, High school grade 1 & 2.  He had to wear those uniforms that did cost us a a freakin fortune and he was bullied over and over by this prick.  Even the police had to step up in that story!  How does uniforms prevent that?  My kids were raised not taking care about material but about people and that's where it's important to do improvements.  They went at other schools where some kids happened to say "Look I'm wearing this or I'm wearing that."  They couldn't care less.  They had greater time hanging with their friends that to listen to people that want to flash.  Actually they were returning the favor in saying "Look at him he's got nothing but his clothes to make him somebody!"

I agree with you fully also in that uniforms do not prevent bullying. Even in uniforms you can see who buys new sets each year and who wears his elder brother's old cloths. This is particular an issue in third world countries that have school uniforms. Also, if some kids smells like farm animals, he'll smell like farm animals all the same in uniform.

However, school uniforms can: keep children dressed decently, prevent "grey area" discussions (like you're not allowed to wear a cap, but are you allowed to wear a headscarf?), and undermine gang culture or other subcultures that can cause tension.

Duh European schools are exactly the same as the US - in having various policies.

Some schools here require uniforms, others just have dress codes. The former is just a more elaborate version of the latter.

I went to a school without a uniform, what you wore was apparently more important than what you said or did, from about age 9 upwards.
I hated it, and embraced geekdom -> freedom from concern about other people's opinions.

If everyone wore the same thing, there would be no distractions when compared to a system with no dress code.

Students in uniform are distracted because they wish there wasn't a dress code, envious of the other schools.

I think every school should have uniforms or none of them should.

Until college, right or wrong, school is about conformity and reaching certain gov't set goals.  If you need to express your individuality, they certainly aren't fostering this prior to college anyway, so it makes sense to do uniforms.

I think that would suck though

Can someone explain this, because I've never got it. How can fucking clothes be a distraction to you're grades? Short of some chick showing up in a breastless discoball suit. Uniforms are shit in my opinion and I never saw how they offered any benefit.

You don't have to worry about what to wear.  In school you are already competing in several ways.  Some think chosing what you wear is an extension of this and is unnecessary.

But like I said earlier, uniforms only make sense if everyone is required to wear one.  Kids in the uniformed school will be envious of those in a school without, which will dimish some of the reason they are required to wear one anyway.

Most school uniforms aren't very good.  If you feel the need for dress standards, get a dress code.  Students should learn how to choose their own clothing, in order to meet expectations.  It's not that difficult...

Uniforms can be good, if they are a point of pride in the institution...but I've never seen this in a primary or secondary school setting.

Dang, that is a cynical view!
Perhaps at the minimum level, it is merely fulfilling government goals, but most students that graduate have some aspiration for a job/career.

Well if you're going to do that all the time there's not going to be a lot of debate going on... In any case, most of Europe doesn't, it's just the UK AFAIK.

As the case with all schools here, I had to wear a uniform for school. What was shitty was that they had logos, and could only be bought from two shops, the school uniform shop, or a 3rd party place that sold the exact same item for the same price.

TBH, I found most of the clothes to be overpriced. And the fact that you (in this case, parents) have to pay for them was just as shitty. And it's just as annoying when your school wants to change the uniform policy.

I like showing up in casual clothes for University now. It feels more.. laid back..

That's still a stretch. That's just finding a scapegoat for your kid getting beaten or having bad grades.

Really?  So you never saw anyone teased about what they wore, or never thought twice about what you were wearing?  Ever?

I haven't, not "because of". People can bullied for various reasons, but things like clothing or general appearance are seldom a reason. They may serve as tools for bullying the victim of choice though.
