Mexico's Congress has passed a bill decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of drugs, from marijuana to methamphetamine, as President Felipe Calderon tries to focus on catching traffickers.

The bill, proposed by Calderon after an attempt by the previous government at a similar bill came under fire in the United States, would make it legal to carry up to 5 grams (0.18 ounces) of marijuana, 500 milligrams (0.018 ounces) of cocaine and tiny quantities heroin and methamphetamines.

The lower house of deputies passed the bill late on Thursday. It already has been approved by the Senate and is expected to be signed into law by Calderon in the days ahead.

Bad move set to stabilize the country more or good move towards ending this drug war? It'll at least be interesting to watch.

The good news: Mexican law enforcement won't be quite as burdened as before.

The bad news: Addictions might spread easier there.  Crystal meth is especially destructive (see our own Fresno, CA for that in action).

Ending the War on Drugs is a good goal, but in the short run, you have to deal with a lot of addicts.  Some of them are so far gone that killing them would be an act of mercy.

I live 45 minutes away from Fresno and boy is the meth problem bad there, when I use to watch the news, their was always a story on cops busting into a house and finding a meth lab, its bad stuff.

Yeah, I watched a documentary with Louis Theroux about meth in Fresno.  It was pretty fucked up.  Louis was visibly disturbed throughout most of the video.
