Now, I can't say I disagree, the law is the law, however I am curious as to how Timothy Geithner, the Secratary of the Treasury, when he got busted, only had to pay what he owed, no punishment, no penalites, no further investigations. What ever happened to the the transparent govt. Obama promised us, and why are they immuned to their own "crack downs"?

Now I know others in govt. have been busted with little or no punishment, but this is so blatant, obvious and undisputable it would seem punishment could not be avoided if for no other reason than to not have to try and justify favortism and double standards and political immunity from your own laws. But hey, thanks to the media, he got away with it

How long ago did Tim Geithner get caught? Was he a member of government at the time?

Doesn't look like it's just the government. Everyone is at it right now.

As you say, the law is the law, and there's currently an amnesty on declaring undisclosed assets.

In March, the IRS began a six-month amnesty program that sweetened the offer with reduced penalties for people with undeclared assets. IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman said the response has been unprecedented.

Shulman wouldn't say how many people have applied so far. But the IRS said 400 people applied to voluntarily disclose undeclared assets in a single week in July, compared with fewer than 100 applications all last year.
400 applications in a week, compared to 100 over an entire year.

I'm not condoning it, but it doesn't really seem fair to impose extra penalties on people in government over all the other tax dodgers who've been keeping their money in Swiss banks.

Your article in the OP doesn't seem very relevant to this. It doesn't even mention him.

It just mentions how a vast number of Americans are currently declaring previously undisclosed assets because there is an amnesty following an agreement rendering the contents of Swiss bank accounts visible to the IRS.

I think there is new found cooperation with the Swiss that is giving the American government some new found leverage.

I know it doesn't mention him, yet he is as guilty as anyone else and gets nothing for it. so yes it is relevant. Also I am not saying make govt. pay more penalties, only the same penalties as the rest of us.

The IRS knew he was not paying even before he was selected for Sec. of the Treasury. And warned him...

It only became public knowledge due to his nomination...

Not sure of the relevance of that. you mean he was caught and still the IRS let him slide, that is not the IRS I have been made aware of

Seems perfectly fair ... isn't our new administration all about fairness?  Oh that's only when someone else is getting nailed to the wall, I forgot.

Supposedly they informed him a couple times,  and he signed forms that said he understood he had to pay...

That is great, but what about the interest and penalties you and I would be forced to cough up?

He would probably not have paid if he had not been nominated, I didn't ever say he was forced to pay the same as everybody, only that he did pay some, but he would likely still be fully delinquent were it not for his nomination...
