I know the story is a bit old but bear with me here.

Romeo Miller is a 5-foot-10 point guard with a bad knee. He has never played a full season of high-school basketball. This season, he averaged 8.6 points a game for Beverly Hills High School, which finished last in its league.

But next fall, the 18-year-old will suit up for the University of Southern California, a program in the tough Pac-10 conference. And he will receive a full basketball scholarship valued at $44,400 a year.

The scholarship, which is the talk of college recruiters, is a perfect L.A. story, intermingling money, show business and basketball. Besides being an average point guard, Mr. Miller is an actor and singer known as Lil' Romeo, and the son of a wealthy music mogul. Some question whether the Millers took advantage of their resources -- and their relationship with Demar DeRozan of Compton, Calif., one of the top high-school basketball players in America -- to win the scholarship over more talented and less privileged athletes.

So any reason why this guy should get a full scholarship even though he isn't at all amazing at basketball and could very well pay for college on his own several times over?

Doesn't this anger anyone else, especially people my age who are college students?

That's a private school. State schools are cheaper and easier to get aid/grants/scholarships. If all else fails you get a student loan. Or you work and go to school at the same time.

That's a private school. State schools are cheaper and easier to get aid/grants/scholarships. If all else fails you get a student loan. Or you work and go to school at the same time.

I don't know about you, but I can't work a $45k job whilst studying full time. You've basically got three choices; scholarship, parents or loan. Or a combination of all three in a lot of cases.

True, even then though, unless you're in state its super expensive. A friend of mine is at UVA, $35k pa.

Richer private universities give out money to those who can't afford the full cost of attending. My university's estimated cost of attendance for 2009-2010 is over $50,000, but I'll be paying less than $7,000 because of their assistance.

Edit: As a note, USC has a long tradition of a being an overrated university for rich kids (University of Spoiled Children).

You are going to Yale...its kind of the exception as opposed to the rule. They are very generous in spending their endowment on their students.

Ya Macbeth its stupid that he gets a full scholarship for that but like Jennings said, it is a private school with enough money to piss away.

Plus if you read the article it sounds like they gave him a scholarship to help lure another very good player to the school so it does make sense from that point of view

Well, yes, they are exceptionally generous. I was just using it as an example, though, to show that private universities don't force full costs except on students who parents can typically afford them.

Well first of all, I would hope people don't fear lambasting me will result in punishment. Second, it's actually a comment directed towards the OP - It is a private university, they should be allowed to do what they want with their money. I could see outrage if a public university spent taxpayer money doing this, but even then, sports are what draws money and people to the school.

Just find it a tad bit absurd that considering the amount of Americans who can't go to college because of the cost, a school gave this guy a free ride even though he could very well pay for it a few times over. I know it's a private uni but you still have to find that just silly.

The college are probably doing it for publicity - having a famous basketballer at the college will probably generate more revenue for them. Lots of colleges are money-making enterprises, not charities.
