Chiquita is a company that deals in Bananas from South America mainly Columbia. They had to pay extortion money to militias in order to not have their employees killed and in order to get those lovely bananas to put in my frosted flakes.
Now Chiquita had been paying these guys huge amount of cash and get fed up with it so they reported it to the U.S. government. The U.S. government decided to fine Chiquita bananas for funding terrorism. The DoJ fined them $25 million dollars. This was after a lawsuit of course by a Environmental group and Human rights groups was brought against the company.
Out of the company reporting being extorted in order to do business the DoJ has not punished any other group or company for their actions in Columbia.
Does anyone else see this entire situation as totally fucked up considering the company did the right thing and eventually reported this only to get themselves sued and fined?
