Coast Guard officials say one person died after a small plane and Liberty Harbor Sightseeing Tours helicopter collided in mid-air and both aircrafts fell into the Hudson River near Pier 40 in Manhattan.

Be A NY1 Eyewitness

The one casualty was recovered by city firemen.

Divers are currently attempting to rescue or recover the other survivors.

Shortly before noon, a small, white Piper PA-32 airplane crashed into the rear rotor of a black helicopter, according to officials and multiple eyewitnesses.

Police say that the helicopter had five passengers and one pilot, and the Federal Aviation Administration said the plane left from Teterboro Airport.

Jamin Swinney, a former flight attendant, saw from Christopher Street that the plane banked severely to the right and that the impact sent pieces of the helicopter's rotor flying.

VFR sucks ass.  That is why I was such a damn rush to get my IFR rating.  Hell I would make my instrument rated friends fly with me while I was gaining my hours so I could fly on a IFR flight plan.  VFR should be abolished.  Too damn dangerous.  Ofc we would need more controllers but still.

For those of us that aren't pilots, care to explain the difference and why VFR is so bad?

Wonder if something happened with the pilot (medically) of the plane just before, tail rotor of a helo can't be that easy to hit.

Story time:

I was taking off from Orlando Executive airport flying to Naples (Florida) in a high wing cessna 172.  At the last second, my old instructor wanted to come along since it was a brand new airplane. (Leather seats, CD player, Garmin, auto pilot, etc)

Right, so we just took off and tower passed us on our way.  We were climbing thru about 3,000 when we saw a blimp (off to our 10 o'clock) over Disney world filming some golf tourney.  We were in a slight left climbing turn and all of a sudden my instructor grabbed the controls and put it into a dive.  I looked over and said what the fuck then noticed a low wing piper (embry riddle lol) about 50 ft from our prop.  I couldn't see him and he couldn't see me.  If my instructor had not been there we would have hit over downtown Orlando for sure.

cool story, bro.

So, long story short...if you get distracted looking at an instrument, tuning a radio, or something like that, it is easy to hit something.  That is the downside of VFR (visual flight rules).  It means ATC is not advising you of traffic and giving you vectors (that would be IFR or instrument flight rules).

Ah.

There was an incident over LA I think it was, not sure how long ago, where a single engine prop plane hit the tail of an airliner. They said it was more than likely a result of the pilot getting distracted and because of the speeds involved, it only took a few moments.

Not when you have to funnel everyone into a small area.

Does sound either like he was momentarily distracted, or he actually went for it.

The latest off of the AP says all nine people involved in the crash are dead, including one child.  Tragic, but given the circumstances, I didn't really think anyone was going to survive.

That's not necessarily true.  I use flight following on VFR flights all the time.  The only difference is there's no checkpoints and you can deviate because you're not on a scheduled route.  They'll even vector you if you get lost if it's not too busy.

Don't tell me that is not true.  Flight following is OPTIONAL.

New video.  To me it seems his engine was working...who knows though.

Apparently, the controller was on the phone.

The air traffic controller responsible for handling the airplane involved in Saturday's fatal midair collision with a helicopter over the Hudson River was put on administrative leave Thursday after investigators said he was involved in “apparently inappropriate conversations on the telephone at the time of the accident.”

The FAA said in a statement Thursday that disciplinary proceedings have begun against the controller and his supervisor, who was not present in the building as required.

It's probably easier than you think to accidently smack into another aircraft, like usmarine said. When you have all the appropriate people doing the right things, you can do some pretty cool stuff though.

I remember watching this video on liveleak:

The closeness and then the relative passing speed is incredible, but it was all controlled.

Going for my first real flight lesson in 15 minutes actually...hopefully no controllers are on the phone.

Seriously, that's just horrible.
