n the debate over healthcare reform, the added cost of caring for patients with obesity-related diseases has become a common refrain: most recent is the cost-of-obesity study, also released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It finds that as obesity rates increased from 18.3% of Americans in 1998 to 25% in 2006, the cost of providing treatment for those patients' weight-driven problems increased healthcare spending by $40 billion a year.

If anti-tobacco campaigns are to be the model, those sales taxes could be hefty:  The World Health Organization has recommended that tobacco taxes should represent between two-thirds and three-quarters of the cost of, say, a package of cigarettes;  a 2004 report prepared for the Department of Agriculture suggested that, for "sinful-food" taxes to change the way people eat, they may need to equal at least 10% to 30% of the cost of the food.

Wow talk about scapegoating food cause of health care.. I'll be the first to say, this is bullshit..

I agree fass, food isn't the only contributing factor to obesity and if more people exercised it wouldn't matter what they ate.

This is not a tax on fat people, this a legislation of personal lives.  As far as taxing smoking products, I agree with this since a smokers smoke affects everyone in the area including non-smokers. Fat people hurt no one except themselves.

It sure does matter what they eat.  Obesity is a skape goat.  Food in modern supermarkets can make skinny in-shape people just as sick.  Also, did you know people who have health insurance are more obesse than people who don't have health insurance?

Well they've actually banned smoking in general area's which removes that.. Taxing the product is just something that's making us poor, I don't care the reason behind it. It's bad..

What's next taxing video games so people start exercising, we're entering into a very very scary time.

Probably because fat people don't get approved or have to pay higher premiums. Obesity brings so many other aliments, high blood pressure, heart conditions, etc that to get health insurance they are going to have to pay more.

If you exercise regularly you can eat junk food and the effects are nowhere near as bad.

Tax fat people, not fatty foods.

What?  The fat people ARE the ones with health insurance.  You can't tax fat people until you get all the bad food out of the markets.  It is no secret that healthy food is way more expensive than the unhealthy stuff.

take a body fat test ( and not the one where you punch the numbers, the one you take in the pool ) once a year - if you're fat ... boom we tax you right there ...... if you're not fat, you get a " good game " and off you go

Ya man.  And let's tax everyone who is not blonde hair and blue eyed.  Let's also tax ugly people.  Oh, and let's tax retarded people since they cost us so much money.  Let's just create a master race.

That's not true.  These foods can cause high cholesterol, even in people that are not fat, and are active.  What also makes these processed and fast foods so bad isn't just the fat, but the type of fat.  You have saturated and polyunsaturated fats that are very bad.

Right now the growth rate of Type 2 diabetes is out of control.  This used to be referred to as adult onset diabetes, but the number of children now getting it is growing very fast.

I like your thinking! We could create a far superior society that way.

PS. Before you start getting too worried, Tubs, 25% is fairly high.

A smoker only hurts himself also.

The accasional breathing in of the smoke from a person next to you is nothing to harm you. Its probly like smoking 1 whole cigg a month. Which is next to harmless.

And if your talking about the annoyance factor or smokers - 100% honestly - 'obese' people (not 'fat', actually discustingly obese people) annoy the shit out of me. Its just gross to see the human body roll so many times.

Eating them in moderation + exercise doesn't hurt (it's not great and I can see where you're coming from though).

Remember those food charts with the pyramid outlining what to eat? Fats are included because some fats are good for you.

Not even close to being true.  You know we have public health care right?  And old people use it.  Old smokers you know?  To take care of them costs money.

Hmmm yeah but most smokers don't get that old.. So healthier people= longer living people = a greater strain on our health care..
