"Offers for help are pouring in for an eight-year-old Liberian girl disowned by her own family in Phoenix, Arizona, after being raped by four boys.

The girl is under the care of the Arizona Child Protective Service (CPS) because her parents said she had shamed them, and they did not want her back.

The oldest suspect, a 14-year-old boy, will be tried as an adult on charges of kidnapping and sexual assault, police said on Friday. He is being held in police custody until trial.

The other three - aged 9, 10, and 13 - are charged as juveniles with sexual assault and kidnapping."

This is just messed up. The age of the boys who assaulted the girl is shocking. The reaction of the girls family is disgusting. From other news sites it looks like the attackers and victim are all African refugees.

If the family want to live in America they should be acting like Americans and help their child deal with the aftermath of the rape. Put the girl in care, adoption even and send the family back to Africa.

Wow, I saw a headline blurb about this girl being raped, but I never saw that her parents disowned her....it may sound horrible, but that's more despicable to me than the actual sexual assault.

Not saying that what the boys did was any less disgusting, but they were all pretty young so I guess you could play that card to defend them (although 14 years old should definitely know that something like this is wrong, immoral and illegal.)

But for parents to not support her blows my fucking mind. I think more than anything this showcases the degree to which women are still considered second-class citizens by a lot of cultures across the globe. Pretty depressing tbf.

It's the most likely. There are more Christians in Liberia than any other religion. Judging by the names I'd say they're Christian.

Nor is it uncommon for African families to disown girls who are raped. Nothing to do with religion, it's an African thing.

From the names I'm fairly confident that the eldest rapist is Christian. It's highly unlikely he's a Muslim with a name like Steven.
