According to the Economic Policy Institute, a liberal research group, 19 states and the District of Columbia previously had wages higher than the federal minimum.

That leaves 31 states affected by the higher federal minimum wage: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

The Economic Policy Institute estimates that about 4.5 million employees, less than 4 percent of the labor force, will see a bump in their hourly wages. But not all of those affected will actually be minimum wage earners. Let me explain.

The bulk of these workers — about 2.8 million people — currently earn less than $7.25, and will receive an immediate raise. But the institute estimates that an additional 1.6 million workers earning slightly above the minimum will be “indirectly” affected because of “spillover effect” — businesses trying to preserve their wage structures.

Considering that the minimum wage just rose to $7.25 from $6.55, what do you think the minimum wage should be? Should it be 9.00$/hr or lower higher what do you think?

Minimum wage (what I get) is 7.50 an hour here. Considering what I do, it's fine.

Can I have a federally mandated minimum amount that my customers have to pay, or is that left to the free market.

The only people who support a minimum wage are those who are making it now, and liberals who don't care about economics.

I'm making $8.50/hr and it's fucking nothing, It's taken me all summer to save up 900 dollars, which is less than one months rent around here.  Works well enough as a teenager, but there's no way to live on that kind of pay

Either it should be $0 or those socially conscious liberals should make it $1,000/hour.  I mean, since they keep insisting minimum wage hikes do no harm to the economy, what would the harm be?

Minimum wage should be 50 dollars and hour... that would turn the economy around in no time.

I'm somewhat out of touch with this issue, but it feel that its hard to have a [i]minimum wage[i] without range limiters sets to other aspects of living. For example: guaranteed amount for acquiring essential food products and shelter at a guaranteed and parallel rate. The minimum wage is a half-socialist idea, a half thought.

Rent                                        450 month
Food                                        100
Power                                      150
Misc (clothing/entertainment)       50

                                                750 month

4 weeks a month... 40 hours a week at 7.25 an hours is $1160 pre taxes....  Considering rent can be split among roommates, and food can be bought in bulk.. You ain't gonna live the high life let alone support a family of 4, but one could eek by.
I stood in line for four hours. They better give me a Wal-Mart gift card, or something.  - Rodney Booker, Job Fair attendee.

Back in the day, you were supposed to be able to live off minimum wage. Obviously not the case nowadays. However, I'm all for lower minimum wage. It will encourage people to get an education or get better jobs that require skill or talent. Plus higher minimum wage means shit costs more

It's livable, but far from decent. A single bedroom apartment miles form the city would cost you about $350 a week another $50 or so on food then you'll need a car, petrol, water, electricity etc. If you're lucky you'll be able to save a few dollars every week, but you'll never get ahead, never have enough for a deposit on a house, never be able to afford any kind of holiday except maybe camping. Minimum wage is there so you can exist and thats about it.

America has it fine. In Taiwan its equivillent to around 3 dollars an hour. Now guess how much does 90% of employers pay for pretty much every job.

Yeah, but you can get financial aid. Go to school for free while other people pay the taxes for it.

Isn't that like, liberal? I mean, why should other people pay for someone else's education? That's like... free health care!

Or, if you go to a private university, donations of rich alumni from the 1950s.
