Isn't this just lovely..

Crime is definitely on the rise around here. It really wasn't a problem at all two years ago when they built. Is this is a symptom of the poor economy? They have had a few neighborhood home break ins as well. They aren't exactly living in the hood. Far from it tbh. It's ridiculous, my mom is home a lot by herself and I've got to say I'm worried. She keeps their house armed but the scum seems to be getting bolder everyday. One of the neighborhood break ins happened in the middle of the day. I'm sure the criminals scoped it out to make sure no one was home, but what happens if they guess wrong and there is a confrontation?

Has anyone else noticed an increase in criminal activity?

An AUDI doesn't come with Locking lugs standard???  That's kinda weak..

Criminal activity fluctuates.  Individuals operate in areas and become emboldened by success.  Chances are is this is a teen that needed a set of rims and tires.  Alarm on the Car?

This was the latest local news.  My bro's boss has coffee with this man every morning..  80+ year old vet....

I think these guys come prepared with tools. They've been getting around home security systems as well. I'm pretty sure their neighborhood is being specifically targeted because it's upscale. TBH, at this point I don't know why the HOA hasn't hired private security. It's sounds to me like there is idiots at the helm.

This whole situation reminds me of this show: http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/ittak … thief.html

Not really...we've always had random home invasions in the poorer areas, but my town/village (whatever you wanna call it) has always been relatively low when it comes to crimes.

The only thing local that happened that I can remember was a couple of weeks ago, a kid from the school I used to go to and was decent friends with was slashed in the arm. Then again, Long Island has always had very low crime rates. I suppose that's why our police force is one of (if not the highest) paid police force in the country.

NOPE NOPE NOPE AND NOPE. Suffolk County police, the eastern county of Long Island top out, are you sitting down? Ready? The top pay for PATROL right now in the new contract is just a tad over $100,000 a year.
They were at 85,000 and got 15% over the next 4 yrs. On shift diff. alone for night shift, which is permanent they get 12%.
BUT when compared with Cost of Living, thats peanuts. I know some departments in Pittsburgh area top out over 75K and a cheap house is only 100-150K
As stated above the highest paid police department in the country is either the Nassau County Police Department or the Suffolk County Police Department with the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office (glorified civil process servers/court officers and jail guards) in the runner up. Starting salary for a SCPD officer is $88,000 and I belive SCSO deputy is somewhere around $50,000ish then for both we have massive amounts of overtime.

Some of the town/village forces also have a pretty high salary.

That's the thing pois.. I'm trying not to sound like an asshole but there isn't a house in my parents neighborhood under half a million dollars (short sales aside). The surrounding area isn't too bad neither. Crime is growing outside of the typical high crime areas.. least round here.

That's because the poor areas are now so poor, absolutely nothing there is worth taking. Look at Detroit, lol.

First, that show pissed me off.  That one guy seemed to enjoy trashing others stuff way too much... I'd a beat his ass, during the confrontation/evaluation part.

Second.... Yea, they come prepared with tools... They want yer rims!!!  Shit, the kids involved are no doubt are outfitting each others cars and maybe taking orders...

You're damn right the neighborhood is being targeted because of it's social economic status.  I remember living in areas where you didn't have to worry about locking you door in the evening either..

Have a home security system, and a dog.  Also be armed.  Screw the HOA.  They are only good for telling the asshole neighbor to mow his law and not paint his house flamingo pink.  Buy pops a Remington marine magnum 12 gauge pump shotty. And FFS have locking lug nuts!

Probably getting hit there in a rich, quaint neighborhood because it's where you least expect it.

Their HOA committee is composed of a Colonel, an ex FBI agent, and other likely to have a weapon in their home folks. Let one of them break into their house. My Dad has a 357. .. doubt my mom could handle it though. They won't have a dog, at least not at this point in their lives. They travel too much. I heard once that motion sensor lights were #2 on top deterrents. Dog being #1. They (Criminals) walk up to the house, lights come on, they think they are getting busted and haul ass. This is of course dependent on the fact that they aren't aware of them. I had motion lights installed as soon as I bought my home. Motion lights don't mean crap when they break in during the day though. Of course I have a 100lb+ bloodhound that could smell/hear them across the street .

Goes against the Burgess zonal hypothesis, but if there isn't shit to steal in the most inner cities then it's logical that the crime would move outward.

However, how long that same Audi would last in the hardest inner city....  Would the couple even get to hit the car alarm button let alone go to bed if in the inner city?

It's a three car garage.. you'd think eh? In fact I think having a car parked over night in the driveway violates their deed restrictions. They may give them a couple nights if they have visitors.

Sounds like a decent HOA.  However, you really can't count on them.  Have pops load the .357 with .38 when he's gone for mom's sake (less recoil and it won't hurt the gun).  Mah' wife knows to put the stock of the 12 gauge into the wall behind her before pulling the trigger (but she's got access to a kimber ultra carry II)..... Lawn signage advertising a security system is good too.

Yea, we've shot them both when we used to go to the range. But to be honest she could be holding a very comfortable glock and it won't mean accuracy. I'm sure you know that. She has even shot the 357 before with the big rounds... a high stress scenario is completely different though.

Funny story about the lawn sign. My Neighbor works for one of the big security companies out here. He gave me a couple once just for the hell of it, after he failed at selling me. I have a system, but it is unmonitored. My house is two doors down from the model (which is always occupied) and the alarm is loud as hell. I'm also in good with the the construction superintendent in my neighborhood. If there was any suspicious vehicles hanging around my house he would call my cell.

Thefts seem to be on the rise in Bethesda, which is pretty damn affluent. Thankfully violent crimes are (and probably always will be) down. That's the nice thing about being in an affluent place... rich people have strong influence over the government. If the cops aren't doing their damn jobs, the government will get hell for it.

Maybe your mother's neighborhood should create a sort of "pole of shame." Any intruders/thieves/attempted murderers that you catch should be shot and then hanged from the pole as a warning to would-be criminals.

My parents house is next door. Fucks broke in and stole her car keys and then car. They knew nothing off it until an old farm widow from about a mile away phoned and woke them up to ask my dad to come up as their where "hoodies" in her farm yard. My dad went out and my mums car was gone. He drove to the farm, parked his jeep across the lane, called the cops. My mums car was parked there, got the keys outta it. Fucked one of them up with my hurling stick. The other two cried and willingly waited for the cops to come. For their own protection I guess. LOL.

Hurling Sticks are great protection weapons.

I used to live opposite my mates house in town. Heard a whole commotion one night and looked out my window to see my mate in his boxers shouting and ranting, with hurling stick in one hand, while trailing a "hoodie" up the street by the leg with a trail of blood coming out of the guys head. Left him in the middle  off the road, took a run and kicked him in balls.
The little fuck was just out of jail and was drunk. My mate had woke to the noise of the front door window smashing. Went downstairs opened the door to find a drunk hoodie, who took a swing at him. My mate cracked him on the nose with his hurling stick almost removing his nose. Guy was in hospital for 2 months with brain swelling and had to have his nose rebuilt. Then was promptly put back in jail. He had caused damage to other houses before getting to my mates. He dragged him away from his house so he wouldn't be involved. Two words. FUCK YEAH!
