On one hand I'm happy the media is spreading a positive light on the office of the President, but on the other hand I think Obama is given a lot more leeway then any other president I can remember (back to Carter for me).

For instance, Obama is a chain smoker.  It's been reported quite often.  So...how come I have never seen a picture of Obama smoking in a newspaper?

Anyone want to discuss?

He is being treated too kindly from what little I see of American news on cable channels. The role of the media is to criticise and hound, not fawn.

You're kind of ending your own argument.

Smoking is neither here nor there but Cam is right, the media's job is to scrutinize and hound not play the role of fanboy.

It was reported quite often, when he was in Congress.  I haven't seen much press on it since he's been president.

The idea is there's some inherent danger in the press acting like a fanboy.  How much are we missing out on because of this treatment?

There's been stories on let's call it "reporting lag" on some of the economic indicators.  Seems like that would have been a pretty good topic that should have had more play then a day or two.

I'd like to find out why this guy is any different, that's all.

I didn't think about that at all, actually.

But I guess if the media's perception that Obama as a great guy is going to sell more papers than if Obama is a bad guy, that would explain a lot.

I don't really take a daily skinny dip into the cess-pool that is mainstream media, but from how people here have been talking it seems like they treat him like a messiah?  I'd really love some examples to put in to perspective what sounds like bitter hyperbole.

Is he a chain smoker, or just a smoker? The difference would be about 5 packs a day.
