Gun rights advocates sought to show their political muscle again Wednesday with a Senate vote giving people with concealed weapons permits in one state permission to carry their hidden weapons into other states with similar gun laws.

Under an agreement of Senate leaders, 60 votes were needed to pass the measure, an amendment to a defense spending bill, and the outcome was uncertain. But the gun rights lobby, putting together Republicans and pro-gun Democrats from rural states, has a strong winning record in recent years.

Backers, led by Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., say truckers and others with concealed weapons permits should be able to protect themselves when they cross into other states. Opponents say the measure would force states with strict procedures for getting permits to accept permits from states with more lax laws.

The provision, Thune said, will ensure that the nation's 5 million concealed-carry permit holders can travel through the 48 states allowing concealed weapons without infringements on their fundamental rights. Only Illinois and Wisconsin have no concealed weapons laws.

But Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., said the proposal would allow people from states that give permits to people with alcohol problems, or child abuse convictions, or which don't require any firearms training, to carry concealed guns in states with rigorous conditions for issuing permits.

"The visitors can ignore the law of the state, the law that the elected representatives of the people of that state have enacted," he said.

Well that just shits on every single state's rights but if this gets passed I'm defiantly getting a carrying permit from Florida and carry in NJ.

This isn't just the GOP btw. Actually there are a lot of Republicans against it.

aaaannnd
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is voting for the bill. Reid has a potential tough fight for re-election in Nevada next year, where polls show him with diminished approval ratings. Three other Western Democrats -- Mark Begich of Alaska and Montana's Max Baucus & Jon Tester -- are co-sponsoring the bill.

Pelosi will tell Reid to sit down and shut up.

I agree that this is a veiled attempt to wrest control of guns from states right to the fed.

Bad idea.

This would be the time for a third party to grow large on a small government platform, seeing as how the Republican party is having an identity crisis.

Open carry can draw attention to you, attention some people do not want.
Concealed carry also gives you the element of surprise.
Plus some carry pistols are small and can be easily inserted into any pocket.

That's basically how I feel as well.

I was happy when the Supreme Court ruled D.C.'s gun ban unconstitutional, but I think there's a good reason why state governments are in charge of setting gun policies in terms of registration.

So the Republicans were overwhelmingly in support of this, but the Democrats had an almost even split.

If it weren't for the two republicans voting no it would have passed ...maybe.

Remember that some of these ppl have no spine. They will pretend to vote for it knowing that it will not pass (to appease at home). However if Nancy would have given the order she would have demanded they vote the party line.

Why the hell were Republicans supporting something like this? Again I like the idea behind it, but do they not realize that it would be setting a dangerous precedent for the federal government to control ALL gun laws, be they for the better or worse?

Even if you like the idea there is no reason the states can not work this out between each other... this isn't a right to have a gun issue. It's right to conceal and impose universal (perhaps lax) gun laws issue.

Not to mention that every state has its own needs.  Utah can get away with lenient gun laws because they don't have any festering crime hellholes like Detroit or Oakland.

Schumer is a really nice guy but is waaaaaaaay too liberal for my tastes.

Although, he's gone up a page in my book for supporting the Islanders renovation project which Long Island desperately needs.

Hell, Florida issues 'out of state' carry permits to residents of other states who visit Florida.  Texas has reciprocity with a butt-load of states too.  Just had some friends visit from Georgia, and they were both carrying.
