He spent his life conducting world-renowned orchestras, but was almost blind and growing deaf – the music he loved increasingly out of reach. His wife of 54 years had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. So Edward and Joan Downes decided to die together.

Downes – Sir Edward since he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1991 – and his wife ended their lives last week at a Zurich clinic run by the assisted suicide group Dignitas. They drank a small amount of clear liquid and died hand-in-hand, their two adult children by their side. He was 85 and she was 74.

The deaths were a poignant coda to Edward Downes' illustrious musical career, and have reignited a debate in Britain about whether people should be able to help ailing loved ones end their lives.

The couple's children said Tuesday that they died "peacefully and under circumstances of their own choosing" on Friday.

So do you think people have a right to end their own lives whenever they choose? What is the secret of soylent green? Would you ever use a service like this if you were terminal?

They kind of already do. If you're terminally ill I can understand ending your own life, but otherwise... hold on to that last sliver of hope. Because there's always a chance that things will improve.

If it is assisted and inside a clinic for terminally ill persons I see nothing wrong with the practice. Unless they are pregnant and there is a chance to save the child, (then place in adoption) it should be their choice. Of course you would have to make sure they are fully aware of what they are doing, as some terminal diseases may impair judgement.

I was a witness to that crap first hand.  The 'husband' was a prick and not much of a man...  We had people on their knees in hallway corners holding poster signs hissing 'save her' as you walked by.  Creepy and yes, I have a living will.
I stood in line for four hours. They better give me a Wal-Mart gift card, or something.  - Rodney Booker, Job Fair attendee.

Save her for what? So she can continue sitting there kept alive only by machinery?

It seems a lot of the people who wanted her to stay alive were the religious types. Wouldn't they prefer that she go up to heaven instead of continue living on earth as a vegetable?

I think I could take care of that myself if it ever came down to it. Unless I was paralyzed of course...

That would make too much logical sense for religion to be involved.

Taking a life is a sin, so they would go to hell.

I think it's pretty romantic actually.
