I think it's pretty dangerous and naive to assume that he just went there on a whim completely on his own. Obviously there are some dudes in whatever city they're in that's recruiting some guys and doing all sorts of shit. It happens here too, there's almost no way you could get guys to go fight somewhere without some sort of organisation and recruiters working.
