While its set in space and technically is SciFi, I like to consider SW to be a nice blend of fantasy and SciFi. I dunno Zique, you might actually like it.  Who knows... Too bad they dont have a trial think like WoW does yet.

"Space" is a very loose term to apply to something that severely limits what you can do in space.

it has changed a fuck ton even since then. but if that's the case you'd know it has a lot of the features that you claim sw:tor 'adds'.

the sad fate of games that take the WoW formula and try to beat it is that they almost universally fail.

Just copying WoW, the imitations fail.
Why play a copy when the original still exists?

Have to add something new, to be anything other than a poor clone.

The voice acting work in SWTOR stands out as above and beyond WoW, by far.
The intermeshing storyline quests are much better thought out than WoW's tired "go fetch me a shrubbery!  TWENTY TIMES!!" quest lines.
The attention to detail in the environmental design is cartoonish, akin to WoW, but at least on par in attention to detail. (Star Trek Online failed miserably there).

If you can see how this game is different despite it having the same underlying mechanics then you are just being wilfully ignorant. If you are going to take the "conversations, personal class stories is irrelevant" approach then congrats on being a robot. These things may not appeal to you but they are what makes the game what it is.

i'd love to be optimistic but i've seen all of those 'concepts' used in other mmo's and fail miserably. look at voice acting in age of conan. lol.

How is that a good comparison? AoC's voice acting dissapeared after level 20 but most people who played the game thought Tortage was pretty good - everything after was when it fell apart.

Any cursory research into this game would let you know that it is voiced the whole way through. And it isnt marketing lies either because there were plenty of people who got characters to 50 in the beta.

Here is how this game works. There are three main things it is made up of - Mass Effect (minus the third person shootery), Star Wars and standard themepark mmo mechanics. If you dislike 1 of those things you will probably be able to grit your teeth past the parts you dont like but I dont see why you would bother, if you dislike 2 of those things then it isnt even worth considering.

Is it possible to play the game without going through the whole MMO stuff? I liked the first two KOTORs and wouldn't mind spending more time in that part of the SW universe I just am not into MMOs...

I look at it this way.  If my money is going towards content patches, expansions, and top notch support then its worth it.

most games give that for free.  or if the extra content costs money, they charge what it costs just to play that game for a month.

So what is the consensus towards the game?

I only play BF3 and Saints Row Three atm, and wouldnt mind something "different". I dont want to pay for something I wont enjoy though, I love star wars, star trek etc but the last star trek game i played (about 8 years ago) was utter pants.

been watching a lot of youtube videos... as i do for every hyped mmo launch... this game looks bad. like bad bad.

the graphics look worse than WoW (at current) and the animations are bad. that was my main fear: combat based on guns and long-range shit often doesn't work very well in mmo's. in this game it either looks stupid or bland. nothing really looks impressive. the class trailers all individually are laughable and i'm not drawn to any of them. most of it  - dare i say it - it actually all looks pretty amateurish.

all of that looks such fucking shit in terms of quality and originality. only thing going for this game atm to me seems like voice acting. big deal. as if a 'story based' mmo is going to unseat the market dominance of WoW and the like. people want an mmo they can play hardcore and endgame in pvp and pve. this game's main selling points are voiced quest-chain dialogue and advertising the fact that if you reroll every class it's a different 'story'. people don't really give a shit about that sorta stuff in the grand scheme of things... they've over-invested time, money and effort in small distractions.

Yeah, voice acting alone can't carry an MMO. I'm pretty sure the fan base will. I would've bought it if space combat was a bit more like, well, space.

Space combat was the strength of Star Trek Online, but still could've done much better. You don't really get a sense of the scale of the ships you're flying around, since it's all done in third person, mostly zoomed way the hell out and because all the interstellar objects are either unapprochable or way under of proportion.. The sense of proportions you got while taking apart ships piece by piece in up-close third person or from the bridge's viewscreen in Star Trek Bridge Commander just wasn't present in STO.

the effects in this game actually look far worse than in WoW. i know you're going to hate the constant comparisons but you know it's going to be the prevailing theme throughout this game's history - it has consciously gone for 'that' artstyle and that underlying game style. how are the spells and effects in this game worse than a game that's a decade old? nothing looks impressive. i really want to like a game with long-term, hardcore potential... i.e. a current gen high-budget mmo. guess i'll wait for guild wars 2, then.

i think this is gonna be the first major mmo release in years that i can actually resist buying. it looks that bad. even warhammer online had more exciting trailers and more promise tbh. what the fuck has happened to mmo's in the last 10 years? this is literally the best people can offer?!?
