Sounds like Eastern Europe is having a very, very rough time of it.

and that's why Ireland is up there and Greece isn't. We always were a shithole of a country - nothing's changed.

Yeah, while we're doing here, avoiding technical recessions, lulz.

Mind you, some of the countries there have really, really small economies, unlike Aus, Canada, UK, France, Russia etc.

Ireland needed a recession. Rents and house prices are dropping to non-astronomical levels, goods and services are becoming cheaper, we finally have a chance to catch up on our infrastructure deficit and all the pampered kids that missed the 80s and that think that Ipods are a birthright get a dose of fucking reality. This could quite possibly be the best thing that ever happened to us. And you have to remember - the vast vast majority still have decent jobs, the shops are still busy as hell as far I can see and bars and restaurants are still doing a roaring trade. The one major impact is that our vast immigrant population is heading back to Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Czech Rep, Hungary, etc.

Why would they move back if (in the case of Latvia) their home country is doing worse?

Does Zimbabwe not count any more? I suppose not seeing as it's not hit with the recession, more poor management.

Ireland and NZ are somewhat similar. For my money NZ needs a recession too, or at least [i]something[i/] to stop the housing boom. When small houses in fairly shitty areas reach the $500,000 mark you know it'll be pretty fucking difficult for anyone in the future to own their own home. We've got state houses that are worth in excess of $1 million in this country and that ain't right. We also need a catch-up in infrastructure due to poor government management in the "Muldoon Era" and subsequent "Holy fuck how to we fix this mess" years of the Lange government.

Because they have to pay high rents and high living costs here, but can probably shack up with the family back home.

And a corrupt government. No fair election process. Economic aid that is diverted away from the people back to the government...

Our economy was doing really well, the only problem was that all of our eggs were in the construction industry basket and our dumbass Government didn't redistribute the wealth towards building other knowledge-based industries while times were good... basically it's the story of the ant and the grasshopper. Add to that the greed of Irish industries and an over-inflation of prices across the board and you have the disastrous scenario we're in right now.

You may laugh but it was your bullshit, free-market Capitalist model that got us all here. Bankers trading on imaginary figures that have no tangible connection with reality with little or no oversight from Governing bodies is what fooled everyone into thinking times were good, times were never good... it was just that while people were running around buying things on credit no one thought to have a look in the safe to see if the money actually existed, and it didn't.

I do have a chuckle at America myself... 'Hyperpower', that was the term wasn't it? We'll see how that term fits when China come to collect their money and all of the interest.

I would laugh to be honest. While everyone else was running around buying property like there was no tomorrow I was keeping my head down and refusing to participate in the make-believe. My PhD is secure for the next for few years and prices are coming down in all areas... happy days.

Erm. All that has really tanked is the construction sector. It didn't have much to do with a dependency on anything. Same types of idiot that brought down your economy brought down ours - speculators. International companies are still setting up in Ireland given our corporate tax rate and educated workforce. The only significant America-related incident was the decision by Dell to move production from Limerick to Lodz in Poland. They outsource jobs in America too ye know.

Went to Jamaica in 2008. I have no idea how it could have gotten any poorer.

On a side note the country was a white mans dream.
