I saved a guy choking at an El Torito once. Didn't even get my meal paid for. Now I know what a serviceman feels like when no one thanks them for their service.

that was mentioned to me by a boomer who seemed excited to relay the news. i don't think i managed to output a very emotional response beyond a monotone 'hmm' as i was processing it (unintentionally, perhaps the greatest tribute i could have done). i think a lot of people's reactions, if they even heard of the man, were "he was still alive?"

quick search yielded these: huffpo wasted no time in calling him a "america's most notorious war criminal." fox scrambled onto its high horse to grouse about disrespectful rolling stone calling him a war criminal ("they should be ashamed!").

Bastard took Shane MacGowan with him too, who, to be honest, I was also kinda surprised was still alive.

Kissinger was a corrupt and vicious piece of shit with a very high opinion of himself.

brooklyn 99 guy, of "brief illness."

thought it meant homicide as cause of death at first, but that was just the name of another show in the headline.

Matthew Perry died taking ketamine. He was on ketamine treatment therapy but the high doses in his system at the time meant he was doing it recreationally too.

I genuinely think ketamine therapy, MDMA therapy, LSD therapy, etc. are all just scams/excuses to do drugs.

i think some stuff is getting lost here, hidden beneath the flavor of the month bogeyman.

his wiki page has a whole section dedicated to his drug (including alcohol) addictions.1

"55 vicodin pills per day"
"by age 14, he became an alcoholic"
"alcohol-induced pancreatitis"
"spent five months in a hospital for a gastrointestinal perforation. During the hospital stay, Perry nearly died after his colon burst from opioid abuse. He spent two weeks in a coma and used a colostomy bag for nine months"
"faked pain to get a prescription for 1,800 milligrams of Oxycontin per day and was having daily ketamine infusions. He was given propofol in conjunction with a surgery, which stopped his heart for five minutes"
"14 stomach surgeries, 15 stays in rehab, and therapy twice a week for 30 years"
"6,000 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings"
all that and he still made it to his 50s.

On December 15, 2023, Perry's death was revealed to have occurred due to "acute effects of ketamine". Other circumstances that contributed to his death included the effects of buprenorphine, drowning, and coronary artery disease.

specifically,
Perry had been receiving Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy sessions to treat anxiety at the time of his death and had his last known session the week prior to his death, although the report stated “the ketamine in his system at death could not be from that infusion therapy since ketamine’s half-life is 3 to 4 hours, or less.”
1side note, it's still weird that people say "drugs and alcohol." why not "drugs and cocaine."

No doubt he died doing exactly what he loved at a good age. The dude fucked and did drugs in a way that I can only aspire to. I want to be Jerry Seinfeld.

This dude was literally a friend.

The guy died in a hot tub from a drug overdose in his late 50s. I live in a studio apartment above a dentist office.

He won the game. Nothing good ever comes from being in your 60s.

That's one way to put it. Another is that he was caught in chemical dependency and impulses beyond his ability to overcome even with therapy. All the surgeries, the coma, nine months with a colostomy bag doesn't sound fun. Nor does sitting in on six-thousand AA meetings. Re: lying about pain - if the man told me he was in pain, I'd be inclined to take him at his word.

A consequence of taking an addictive pain medication, you may become addicted. Vicodin should be about 6-12 a day, max. Depending. Wiki says he was on 55 at one point. Reading again, I have to question that. You'd think overdose would occur at well under half that. It doesn't take much hydrocodone, right? And wiki says he was eating them like a kid would a bag of Smarties. wtf?
