But congrats at least your kids are doing well, guess that is the most you could hope for nowadays.
No, not the most I could hope for, the most we could enable for them.  What I mean is, it takes involvement (mostly on my wifes part) to raise kids well.  We take the time to find out which teachers are better and request them to be our kids teachers.  We don't just leave it up to chance.  We also prepare them for school and don't just let the system decide what they know.  I would have to say I am raising 3 (so far) very conservative, well adjusted, bright kids.

speaking of schools...

explain two things:

A) Why do we (the US) go to school WAY less than the rest of the world? i.e summer break
Don't know!

usmarine wrote:

B) Why do teachers make the same money as a lot of people yet work 3/4 of the time as those same people?
Actually for the time they spend in school they aren't too bad.  My fathe in-law has been a teacher for 28 years.  He make less per year than I do.  I have no college degree and work in a food plant.  Where they get the goods is in the benefits like retirement.

The job does not end when the students leave, teachers have to write lesson plans, grade papers, participate in extracurricular activities, and take classes to keep up with government standards.  teachers with masters degrees around here routinely make only $40,000

And have you seen today's youth? Teachers have to have tons of restraint to not go apeshit on them since even thinking of instilling some god damned discipline and respect into a kid gets you sued.

A. How many weeks do they go?
Here its about 40 for public schools and ~35 for private. Though public schools get half a day of each week to play sport while private schools do that on Saturday mornings.

B. They're in demand and not just anyone can teach.

aye..yet we suck when it comes to education.

plus, compare that to someone who makes the same amount who doesnt get 3 or 4 months off per year.  (i think the average in 2005 was 46,700 something)

you get what you pay for, our government uses money to pay for pointless welfare programs, not the teachers who can stop poverty all together.  If they'd be competitive with other industries, they could have experts teaching our children.

side note, I assume you've never met a teacher outside of a classroom.

A lot of them earn every cent of that paycheck, and more, but some are quite pathetic, it varies dramatically school to school.

What's interesting is that in the United States the bottom third of our college graduates go into the teaching profession, while in other countries its the opposite.  At least that's what I've heard (I'm too lazy to go find anything to back up my statement).

Because the salary is low, I can make four times the salary in the industrial field, why would I teach?

Let's not leave out New York... How about those teacher unions... f*ckin ridiculous
"700 NYC teachers paid to do nothing... Accused of misconduct, taxpayers foot bill at cost of $65 million a year"

"
NEW YORK - Hundreds of New York City public school teachers accused of offenses ranging from insubordination to sexual misconduct are being paid their full salaries to sit around all day playing Scrabble, surfing the Internet or just staring at the wall, if that's what they want to do.

Because their union contract makes it extremely difficult to fire them, the teachers have been banished by the school system to its "rubber rooms" — off-campus office space where they wait months, even years, for their disciplinary hearings.

The 700 or so teachers can practice yoga, work on their novels, paint portraits of their colleagues — pretty much anything but school work. They have summer vacation just like their classroom colleagues and enjoy weekends and holidays through the school year."

.....
Union rules blamed
Because the teachers collect their full salaries of $70,000 or more, the city Department of Education estimates the practice costs the taxpayers $65 million a year. The department blames union rules.

"It is extremely difficult to fire a tenured teacher because of the protections afforded to them in their contract," spokeswoman Ann Forte said.

Didn't you lot steal California from the Mexicans anyway?

You get these problems everywhere. Here, its the immigrants, travelers/gypsies or kids from single mums. Their kids get priority over tax payers kids with regards to placement. The world is a fucked up place ATG. As long as their is capitalism their will always be poor people wanting to live where the rich ppl live...............

We stole it from the Spanish who stole it from the natives.

Now, the descendants of the Spanish want it back.  I say, take it.

You see this is the main why I'm moving to Maine, the teachers are gone half the time because their interviewing for jobs in a different state, the kids all think their the best thing since sliced bread eventhough they can't spell SAT, and I have gone the past four years on four different principles.   I could go on but I'd just be tooting on about what you already know "California schools are shit."
Maine...are our schools good or something? Our budgets are low as far as money for extra-curricular activites are concerned. Things tend to get cut out. Hell in jr. High school in '93 our 7th grade basketball team wore larry bird era shorts. Heh. After I graduated 90% of my class went to college. Of the kids that went to college only a few came back to live in the state. You might get a good education, but don't come here looking for a job after, 'cause there isn't any.
