Colby Curtin got her final wish.

The 10-year-old girl desperately wanted to see the new Disney-Pixar movie, "Up." But the cancer-stricken girl was too sick to go to a theater.

Thanks to a family friend who got in touch with the movie studio Pixar, an employee of the Emeryville-based company arrived at Colby's home with a DVD copy of the movie, The Orange County Register reported Friday. The girl died later that night.

Colby's mother, Lisa, said she had asked her daughter if she could hang on until the movie arrived.

"I'm ready (to die), but I'm going to wait for the movie," she said her daughter replied.

Colby was unable to open her eyes to see the movie so her mother described the scenes. When her mother asked if she enjoyed it, the girl nodded, Curtin said.

Call me a bleeding heart liberal faggot but I honestly wouldn't very much mind paying higher taxes if I knew it would help children like that. Now before anyone says "/care" or "how is this DST material?"

I would pose the questions for the Americans; If socialized medicine could be successfully implemented in the U.S. would you mind paying slightly higher taxes for it?

if you think it costs a lot now, wait until it is free.  how would what you are saying saved this girl?  it would not have.

I'm just using this situation for a hypothetical. Giving framework and perspective.

That was awesome of Pixar, and such a good movie too.

I'll ignore the taxes/healthcare issue since I dont care about that as much as the actual story.

in reality taxes should go down with socialized medicine.  i mean we have free health care now.  its just if you are uninsured, you have to go to the emergency room if you have a cold for example.  that costs the taxpayers WAY too much green.

Everybody I say that too says the exact same thing.

Very thin plot. Poor character development. Little kid humour.

I'm not a small child, so I didn't like it.

I like Pixar movies. I cry every time I watch the ending to Ratatouille. Some of them can be very touching.

Its not supposed to be a really deep movie, though the first part of the movie with the old man and his wife was really sad and at the end, touching.  Theres no way you could dislike that movie.  And that little dog was hilarious.
The best way to describe that movie is cute.  And since I went to see it with a female interest... it worked to my advantage

The squirrel joke got old the first time I saw the trailer, and it was the only one that was actually funny.

The high pitch "alpha" dog was just painful, although not as annoying as all the high pitch laughter in the theatre.

I did not see it with a female interest, I was forced to go when my friend decided to take his girlfriend to it instead of come with me to the hangover.

It was deep in that it had plenty of interesting stuff that little children wouldn't understand, I liked the references to Charles Lindbergh, but that was about the only thing I found enjoyable about the movie.

Not to mention doctors stopping for the year when they reach their pay check.

I'm on the doctors side of life (IRL) believe me doctors in socialized medicine countries stop practicing about mid way through the year when they reach their quota. It costs too much to run an office without profit.

Take canada for example. People come to the us to get good medical care. My family knows doctors who practice in Canada until they reach their quota then practice the rest of the year in the US.

Most of them eventually move full time to the US.

Think socialized medicine is great? Wait to you heavy drinkers need dialysis later in life LOL.

I had to. I just had to.

Spoiler (highlight to read):
Yes, nothing is off limits in Australia. Pretty sure the woman who was in charge of censoring them when they go to far got sacked for letting this go to air though.

On topic: for a happy medium how about a half-half system like Australia's. Ours will go out the window soon. Gg aging population.

Considering how much more we pay for drugs and general care than the rest of the world, I'd say we're getting raped right now.

If we did go socialized, it would just mean that these companies wouldn't make exorbitant profits like they currently do.  I have about as much sympathy for big pharmaceutical companies as I do oil companies.

Or assisted suicide, like in Oregon. The system is fucked up.

I read about a lady who had cancer, and the system wouldn't pay for the pain meds to make her feel better for the last few months, but they sent an unsigned letter offering to pay for a doctor to assist in offing her.

The drug company stepped in and gave her the meds for free.
