One thing that's missing about this case.

He and his wife had stamped out in the snow a S.O.S.
It WAS seen and dismissed with out being investigated.
A private chopper service reported it for, I think, on three different days before checking it out themselves.

Working from memory here so the chopper service thing could be wrong, but the rest is right.

The police and the rescue service dismissed the reports of the S.O.S. until it was to late.
I'll add that the couple WERE in a unpatroled/out of bounds area.
