Lack of healthcare for everyone is also one of the many reasons why the US is the laughing stock of the entire world. I mean, a country so rich, but a lot of the time far too expensive to actually LIVE in and maintain a high quality of life. What places in the world are rated as having the highest quality of life? Places with higher taxes and social benefit programs. Just look at most of Europe, man. Maintaining a balance between socialism and capitalism ISN'T that hard. The problem is the greedy mindset of the American people (I know, I'm one of them) in regards to certain things. Americans bitch when taxes are raised, but don't realize that they pay a very small fraction in what the rest of the world pays. The difference is, the rest of the world is also using tax money to put things back into society.

Perfect case: Watch Michael Moore's movie "Sicko". Granted, Moore does miss the point a lot of the time, but he also makes very good points. The part in Cuba is a total waste, but the section of the movie where he is in Paris is very good and worth a watch.

Those "highest quality of life" lists are absolute bullshit. They examine what you have, not what you give to get it. That's not measuring the quality of life, that's measuring the outcome of your sacrifice. To accurately measure "quality of life", you have to measure what you have against what you sacrificed to get it, and that's too subjective to measure broadly.

I'm moving from Denmark to the US next year, and despite the fact that my very sound financial situation will take a significant hit, and despite Denmark having a higher "quality of life" on these lists, the quality of my life will go way up. I just don't agree with how things are done in Denmark.

There are no guarantees in life, but there are more labor rights in France.  It would be nice if we had as many as they have.

PBO gets CBS ABC time

I guess PBO is ramping up for public option health insurance and a major over haul of health insurance in general.
He is taking the message directly to the people so that they can keep the pressure on Congress and hopefully run over the lobbyists.

Last time public health care was discussed during Clinton, he got run over by the lobbyists. I doubt they'll get to do that to PBO.

IMO PBO feels like grilling some road kill and I say good hunting.

EDIt oops CBS, ABC its all the same fixed

The quality of life things aren't really BS. Perhaps the economic laws in Denmark are different, but I can speak about Austria. You get loads of social help benefits. Pay a little less than 50% income tax (but it is a three tier, so if you make less than €40k, you pay less than 50%. I'd have to look at the tier chart again to be sure), but get a FUCK LOAD of stuff out of it. Me, personally, I'd rather have all the nets to catch me if I slip than rather fall and hit rock bottom and break my neck doing it. You can get rich in Austria real easily. Shoot, most of the people here in Austria that I know that do well for themselves all own their own businesses. But they also work 60 hour weeks, too.

You can do the same in pretty much the entire world. If you don't make enough money, you don't have to pay as much (or any) taxes. Same in the US as in Europe. But making money is NOT frowned upon. HOW you make money is certainly frowned upon, but making it is not. If it is, that's out of jealousy alone.

I mean, Americans pay what? 10% income tax, iirc? All of Europe pays on average 50% (some higher, some lower).

More around 30%. But see Americans don't trust their gov with their money. Corruption lulz.

Perhaps in the higher-tiers 30%. I remember paying only like 10-15% on my paychecks at my last job in the US. I can't imagine it's that high.

But States need to take a more active role in welfare and medical stuff as well. I can't count the times I've seen welfare being wasted and being spent on stupid shit (like wedding cakes; I worked in a grocery store for 2 years, I saw A LOT of fucked up shit).

And most of their money on weddings ffs. I mean, seriously...

Personally, the state should provide social welfare, not the federal government, since people don't trust it. State provides, but if necessary, funding from the federal government can come in. So people don't get fucked over if they get sick while unemployed. Sure theres the argument "If you're qualified, you'll get a job fast!" not that easy tbh.

It's funny Americans think in a socialized medical system the legislators decide about the medical treatments... But in fact, it just let doctor's do their jobs, and the state provides the benefits.

So the Democrats are talking about taxing your benefits you get, basically making your current health insurance ~35% more expensive.
http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2009/0 … efits.html

Now what I've heard, I have not confirmed, that Unions will be excluded from the tax on their health benefits.

EDIT: Looks like Harry Reid in the Senate is going to ram Obama's health bill though without public debate:
http://www.cnsnews.com/public/content/a … rcID=50131

I guess this is the tactic that Democrats are using now to get things though congress.  Must be nice with a 60 vote filiibuster-proof majority.

I'm definitely against having my employer plan taxed.  And yeah, Obama used to be against that too....

Well, to be fair, the Republicans rammed a lot through between '01 and '06.  They didn't have as much of a majority, but they were still able to ignore Democrats a lot.

Two wrongs don't make a right.  I would call the Republicans out on the same thing if they were trying to pass a bill without it being fully vetted.
