i am sure most people want to fight the capital beltway for some tomatos. thats still not my point though. we should be able to go the the local grocery store and get the same quality food.Hurricane2k9 wrote:

It is country or culture specific I guess. Food quality here in Holland is distressing at least, any foreigner will tell you that. One kilometer passed the border and quality rises with at least 50%. Another border away and you're good.
While I agree with the basic premise of the OP/movie, (we eat too much processed crap) this is something of a myth.Turquoise wrote:
True. Corn syrup is a toxic substance with regard to long term health, and we should return to the use of sugar cane, because it is far healthier.usmarine wrote:
agree. especially corn. corn makes up most the crap we buy.Turquoise wrote:
More than anything, we need to end all farm subsidies (whether they are for small farmers or corporations).
Sugar and HFCS are not that different, they are both bad for you if you consume them in mass quantities, or if you are prone to obesity or diabetes

There is a certain amount of hysteria about HFCS out there...however, with that said, I would agree that it is added to far, far too many processed foods...it's just not needed in so many products where it is found, imo.
Do you have a source on this ban ? I can't find any...if it falls under the ban on GM foods, then that might be factualjsnipy wrote:

and its banned in Europe
From what I'm reading, the reason it isn't found in Europe, is that sugar is simply cheaper there than in the US, where cane sugar has high tariffs

I try to shop only at Whole Foods and Trader Joes and buy organic whenever and wherever I can. There's a local farmer's market a few days a week that I frequent semi-regularly for veggies and fruits, and the occasional fresh fish. It's healthier for me and the people I cook for, plus there is a good feeling when you go directly to a small-time local farmer and pay him directly for his product. Organic food really isn't as expensive as people think, and eating fast food isn't always cheaper either.
I eventually want to get to the point where I am raising/farming my own food to eat, but that's a long ways away. As it is I've been working here and there on a kind of comprehensive nutrition plan to balance my diet and get all the vitamins I need, because I know that I don't eat enough fruits and veggies but it seriously is a monumental task that seems to have no end in sight. I need a nutrionist but I don't want to pay for one

Also since when were you a mod?
You can't get this passed through a corrupt political system where bills are passed because money said so ... consumers have the real power, just stop buying their products ...
Wait behind the line ..............................................................
Prepackaged food basically sucks
I try to make most food from scratch with fresh veggies and meats.
I try to stay away from High Fructose Corn Syrup, Soy bean Oil, and salt. prepackages foods has loads of these. Salt is used as a bulking agent to add extra weight to the package so you think your buying more food than you actually are. Companies think that salt is cheap and people like salty foods so its more money for them. On the same lines MSG is crap, you can always tell if food has MSG because the first two bites tastes fantastic and then your taste buds get over loaded by the sodium and the rest of it tastes like a shit taco in your mouth.
also Soy bean oil is in everything, look at any condiment and there it is. look at margarine too.
Also I don't use margarine, I use mmmmmm butter mmmmm. It may be bad but its more natural than margarine.
Anyway you do what you can because you still have to eat.

Lots of margarine products actually have trans fat or partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. I'd take a hearty serving of saturated fat over trans fat any day.Diesel_dyk wrote:

Ken, buying organic/fresh is easy if you live fairly close to a major agricultural center, expensive if you don't.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.
Yeah well to those people living in the middle of nowhere (like the Northwest Territories, Somalia, Ethiopia etc) - sucks to be you. In the end you have to feed yourself however you can. But we are talking generalities here - and a switch to organic/ethically grown food isn't a bank buster.
Just reading the history of the sugar industry is interesting.
Fuck Israel
So I just watched Food Inc.
These food corporations should be shut down and their CEOs strung up.

you really do not have much of a choice. (in relation to cost)
...or in relation to distribution or standards.usmarine wrote:

Just because something says organic, it isn't necessarily... It's like the FDA intentionally does not regulate organic food because that would make it legitimate.
In addition, we don't subsidize organic farming the same way as we do regular corporate farming.
Clearly, there is a corporate agenda, but as Harmor shows us, the public isn't very informed about it.
Believe me, after watching it I wanted to jump on the metro with a rifle and head down to Congressusmarine wrote:

(kidding FBI... sort of)
This film needs to be mandatory watching for all Americans. The sooner people start buying organic, fresh and local the cheaper it will become (up to a certain point). I'm even considering vegetarianism or pescetarianism after watching the film, simply because it's wrong to keep giving money to CAFOs and inhumane killings (yes, humane killings is a bit of an oxymoron).
What's amazing is how the film exposed so many screwed up parts of the government that aren't necessarily directly related to food. For example how the government cracks down on illegal immigrant workers but does NOTHING against the companies (like Shitfield) that employ them. Or how a company can patent a fucking plant.
100% relevant

I spent some time in Poland and fresh food is the cheapest available (especially away from Warsaw). Processed stuff costs more. Hats off to Poland.
Sorry, I also forgot about how these companies can sue people for saying they've stopped eating their products. Freedom of speech my ass.usmarine wrote:
