A friend in New Zealand sent me this excerpt from the letters section of a local newspaper:

P Miller is correct. Linking humans to animals through fossils is incredibly pathetic and fraudulent. The whole theory of evolution is wrong.
The truth of the matter is that a cosmic Jewish zombie, who was his own father, can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree.
Fossils were put on earth by God to test our faith,  that makes perfect sense.

It all seems so obvious when you think of it like that. Your summary has convinced me, I renounce my atheism and take up the catholic faith.

Where do i sign?

I want to worship the Jewish zombie overlord…

I got my letter featured in the Dominon Post, (the paper this letter most likely came from since the writer was from Mt. Vic.) Wasn't quite as funny but at least mine was feckin' original.

That's funny - the guy who sent me this said he saw it in the Dominion Post.....

Just curious fellas but how do you know that the letter to the paper wasn't the original?
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

Looks like the designer of that image has confused atheism with the big bang theory. Many atheists do in fact follow the big bang theory but it is not, in itself, an intrinsic part of atheism. Atheism is fundamentally a rejection of faith, not an acceptance of something else.

Seriously, sure the pic originated on 4chan but how do you know the writer of the letter and the dude who put the pic together aren't the same crazy Kiwi bloke?

We've been through this before. Semantically speaking, atheism is in opposition to theism, and is the rejection of belief in a deity. It is not areligion (it is, however, a religion).

However, Letters to the Editor make me worry for humankind. Whenever I read the Opinions page in my university newspaper I wanted to meet these people just so I could scream "IDIOT!" at them. There was a very similar letter by some über-Christian that made me ashamed to be linked to him in that regard.

Looked at the paper today, sure enough there it was. Didn't get featured, (printed with a picture in a separate box,) like mine did. Thpbpbpb.

Letters to the Editor are great in Uni magazines. Most of the letters in our magazine are poems or random musings or just people writing about themselves - most are written under pseudonyms. I should know seeing as I'm one of the alpha regular pseudonyms, writing my little bit of bollocks each week.

However as I do read the Dominion Post, (also called "The Dom Post" for short which led to another nickname - "The Dumb Post",) I can say that there is a constant flow of ridiculously stupid letters. Some are good but the bad ones are just really bad.

Have you ever met a happy Atheist?  All the ones i have come across were bitter about something in their own life and the only thing that gave them a brief amount of perceived happiness was trying to discount someones elses beliefs...      Have a Great day everyone....lol

I'll just go ahead and answer "yes" before someone makes the reply that "happy" Christians are living in a dreamworld of spells and fairies.

I'm a happy atheist. Though I do agree with you that there are many people who are just grouchy arseholes who use their beliefs as a weapon against others, but you get that regardless of the Theism in conversation.

I kind of swich between athiesm and agnostisism but I consider myself a happy athiest/agnostic. I also would like to say that it's not the practise of athiests to discount other's beliefs - we're not the one's who stand out in the street trying to hawk our ideas to passers by.

Actually, the pic makes a good point.  If there was a god, why would it make Richard Dawkins?

I posted and had to go out for awhile... just wanted to say how impressed the rational responses to the picture i posted...
I know all Atheists aren't angry... and i completely respect their choice to believe whatever gives them piece of mind...
The ones that use it to vent their anger and ridicule people are the ones i don't understand... but they are the same as the nutty Christians that
believe if you don't become a Christian you are doomed and not going to heaven...  Like Elvis Costello said... "What's so funny about peace, love and understanding...."

It's funny you would say that because most of the people of faith that I've ever met have struck me as not being truly happy or confident in themselves. They always seem to be racked with religious guilt when it comes to sexual or social matters, slightly self-loathing in terms of how their faith views humanity and they never give anyone any credit for their achievements, instead they put it down the actions of an unseen deity. Atheists on the other hand draw all their strength from within and tend to live for the moment and enjoy what time they have on this planet.

Oh God, here's one that was in the paper today:
Shame on legislators passing bills in their states to make same-sex marriage possible to people who choose this choice over our Creator who put us on this Earth to do good.

I would just base it on the amount of Atheists posting about how much they despise religion
and the lack of religious people posting about atheism... we don't have time... we are way too happy...

Why is it, that...the super well adjusted, happy  atheists spend even a minute of time... on worrying or getting upset about
or even thinking about silly religion?   Don't they have themselves to focus on... or is that the problem?

Happiness is not exclusive to religion or atheism.  Happiness is a state of mind that has more to do with your outlook on life rather than what you believe happens after death.

For example, a happy Christian is tolerant and emulates Christ's way of thinking.  An angry or sad Christian fears what he/she doesn't understand or agree with and lives only for the afterlife.

A happy atheist lives life for the sake of enjoyment and helping others, while an unhappy one believes that life is meaningless because nothing comes after death.

In both cases, the happy person focuses on the present life, while the unhappy one focuses on what comes after life.
