just a quick figure;

The average cost per person p/a for the NHS on paper (expenditure/population) is about £1500.

reality, it's probably about half, 2/3rds that with donations and whatnot.

So lets be conservative and call it £1000.

Me as an example, in the past two years i've had 3 new sets of front teeth, and major surgery on a hand. and i'd say i'm an average UK citizen. So (if i was paying taxes) it'd have cost me (private) £4500 on the teeth, and fuck knows how much on the hand.

so NHS (maybe) saves me £1.25k

edit

oh, and our governments seem to run it like a sieve.
Right now my government manages to spend over $7,149 per capita  (2003 numbers, I'm sure it's gone up).

Well.. also consider they break in a couple months too. mmyeah.
I wish I could get $100k+ per year and take extended leaves like that.

And accomplish the square root of fuckall when I'm not taking extended leaves.

And not be held accountable for my poor performance.

That would be a sweet gig.

Would be sweet if performance dictated pay and they weren't responsible for their own salary increases.

Well nothing wrong with that, he has performed a service for a fee,  he should expect payment not the royal runaround. I am sure he has 8 years of medical school to pay for along with other bills. Or is he not supposed to expect payment?
i didnt say that.  but, the govt aint the answer.  it may be better for him, but it will be worse for us.  i am sure he drives a nice car and has a nice house still.
To that point I can not argue.

Except to say that I have no problem with a doctor having a nice life, he has EARNED IT. I would not think you would have a problem with it either.

But when the current system is being assrapd by insurance companies, I do respect his frustrations, as well as a patients frustrations when their services are constantly denied coverage for no other reason than because the insurance company knows most people will not fight it.
hmmm..well, it appears the american medical association does not want this health care stuff from nObama and the govt.  wonder why.

Good question. The AMSA have written a nice response to the AMA proposals.

It's a very good response and I encourage everyone to read it.
