these are 2 quick renders with geocontrol2 terrains and rendered in Vue7 with terrain textures and trees...
huge amount of polygons...lol and this is just scratching the surface with what these programs can do...
I believe DICE used geocontrol2 for their BFBC terrains...
Geo has a 30 day demo...
and Vue7 has a learning edition with water marks...

I used to play around with... Terra-something... I don't remember the name of it. I'll definitely have to check out those programs though!
