So says the BBC

BBC wrote:

North Korea has staged a "successful" underground nuclear test, the state-run KCNA agency reports.

The agency says Monday's test was "aimed at strengthening its [North Korea's] self-defence nuclear deterrent in every way".

The news confirms earlier reports by South Korea's Yonhap news agency.

On Monday, the KCNA report said that "the current nuclear test was safely conducted on a new higher level in terms of its explosive power and technology of its control".

It said the results resolved "scientific and technological problems arising in further increasing the power of nuclear weapons and steadily developing nuclear technology".
Seems to be fresh news over here

and indeed over the pond

MSNBC
Reuters

Worrying.

The BBC article is probably the deepest of those i've provided.

And with SK confirming it, it on surface appears to be legit (unlike their previous attempt). IMHO a nuclear NK is far more of a threat than radical islam for example.

Thoughts.

Actually it works quite well as a deterrent.

See I don't think any UN/NATO/ANZUS coalition would invade a country that could drop a nuke on a neighbor.

The way it always works.

You give them aid, so they don't go nuclear. You'll provide food and electricity subsidies, increased trade favours towards them, or they threaten to go nuclear because they need the reactors for "energy".

Which is the whole point of having nukes these days. So you don't have to use them.

More worrying is the possibility of a state-less organisation such as AQ or the IRA getting their hands on a nuke. Which is a possibility in Pakistan atm.

Sad thing is the NK populace are so indoctrinated, i doubt they'd have qualms over using nukes.

And any land invasion would be costly, very very costly.

So, fuck 'em.

I honestly don't give a shit anymore. Japan survived two nukes.

Just because somebody sets off a nuke doesn't mean the world has to end.

today with every (important global stage country) having multiple population centres exceeding 1 million, and armed to the teeth with nukes?

It's not world ending but it'd be fucking bloody.

A full on conventional war with NK would be costly. but the large majority of NK's reaction forces would be dead before UN/EU/ANZUS troops are landed. Theres no possible way that NK would have air superiority, therefore their units would be sitting ducks for Fighters, bombers, Attack Choppers, and AC-130's (or similar). (Obviously air power isn't everything, but in a modern conventional war, good luck without it.)

In terms of using nukes, NK nuclear ability is quite "limited" using any form of nuclear weapons would assure destruction of their own country. I think they would use it as a deterant, but even if they are slightly insane I doubt they would use nukes.

This.
Testing a nuke does not equate to being able to use it effectively. Two completely different situations.

As for the previous attempt: This is just like that one...except it worked this time.

War with nK would mean Seoul would cease to exist. Yes, the "good guys" would eventually win, as nK can't sustain anything, but the deaths on the ROK side would be simply unbelievable.
