U.S. Urges Israel to End Expansion

In blunt comments on the Qatar-based news channel al-Jazeera on Tuesday, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said: "We want to see a stop to settlement construction, additions, natural growth -- any kind of settlement activity. That is what the president has called for."

"Natural growth" refers to population expansion as a result of births, adoptions and the like -- a position successive Israeli governments have rejected, though it is an Israeli obligation in the 2003 peace plan known as the "road map." The Bush administration accommodated Israeli concerns with a secret understanding that allowed for growth in settlements that Israel hopes to keep in any peace deal with the Palestinians.

Israel appears to be responding to American pressure to curb settlement activity. But implementation could be difficult.

JERUSALEM (AP) -- Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that Israel will continue to build homes in existing West Bank settlements, defying U.S. calls to halt settlement growth.

The comments came days after a contentious visit to the White House and threatened to widen a growing rift with the Obama administration. The U.S. considers the settlements - home to some 280,000 Israelis - obstacles to peace since they are built on captured territory the Palestinians claim for a future state.

The israelis are playing with fire... obama seems to really want the pal state and he will not bow to AIPAC pressure. American money will stop flowing if the israelis do not obey.

Imho this whole thing is no reason for the US to change the status quo with Israel. It would take something a lot more sinister than a bunch of illegal settlements, and since the Israelis know that, nothing will change. Or maybe that's my pesimism speaking.
