MOSCOW (AP) - Riot police violently broke up several gay rights demonstrations in Moscow on Saturday, hauling away scores of protesters hours before the Russian capital hosted a major international pop music competition.

City officials had warned they would not tolerate marches or rallies supporting the rights of gays and lesbians. Activists had targeted Moscow, which was holding the finals of the Eurovision song contest on Saturday, to press their claims that Russia officially sanctions homophobia.

Police seized gay rights protesters as well as some members of religious and nationalist groups that staged counter-demonstrations. They also took away gay rights activists for simply talking to reporters, and ripped the bra and shirt off one female protester.

Moscow police spokesman Anatoly Listovetsky said 40 people were detained, although media reports said up to 80 had been seized.

City authorities had barred Saturday's rally, saying it was morally wrong.

"(Gay pride events) not only destroy moral foundations of our society, but also purposefully provoke disturbances that will threaten the lives and safety of Moscow residents and guests," City Hall spokesman Sergei Tsoi was quoted by the ITAR-Tass news agency as saying Saturday.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I think that the mistake was both in the former thread title and in it's being placed in EE.

I think the squashing of the parades deserves commentary outside the usual flotsam and jetsam found there.

Russia has never been known to be tolerant of much at all, especially not gays, Jews, or non-whites.

'Russian forces'?

Shit title. I came in here looking for something like Tienanmen Square. Riot police = police. Not Russian 'forces' tbqfh.

So basically the riot cops got heavy on a gay rights demonstration. The demonstrators were told their protest wouldn't be tolerated and went ahead with it?

yep. i just read the russian news on this - they were told in advance that they will not be allowed to "parade" on that day - they showed up anyway and have been promptly arrested. that's about it.

But the question remains...  Why is Russia so fearful of gays?

The gay-pride march was banned.

The gay-pride march protesters march was allowed to go ahead.

Which means that if the gay pride parade hadn't gone ahead (as the police had hoped), you would have seen just an anti-gay protest march protesting the gay march that didn't take place. lol

i honestly don't know. i also don't think russia's actually fearful of gays. they are traditionally despised and that's being consistently supported by russian orthodox church and many other organisations. personally, i've no problems with gays as long as they don't try to parade in my hallway. i do, however, think their "parades" are ugly and pointless, but so are *cough* eurovision finals and stuff like that, so... whatever. i just hope nobody got seriously hurt.

The parades wouldn't happen if they had equal rights.

Err dude...

They basically have equal rights (civil unions and such afaik), acceptance and tolerance here in Aus and they still insist on keeping Sydney's Mardi Gras all to themselves.

Well, isn't being "traditionally despised" an understandable stimulus for wanting to protest?

you think so? they do parade in other countries too. it's not so much about rights i think, but rather about their notion about themselves. the too are connected of course, but i don't think attention whores among them would just stop waving their asses around even if their rights were brought to the level with everybody else.

Sydney's Mardi Gras isn't a protest. It's a gay pride parade. Discriminatory against heterosexual people tbh.

Ah k. Idk, I think having their parade shut down isn't a bad reason to protest. Doesn't actually harm anybody. Just kinda annoying. Staging a protest after being warned that it wouldn't be tolerated isn't a smart move though if you are concerned about your health and safety.

Ah...  not that recent I guess.  How do you feel toward the nations that used to make up Yugoslavia?
