I'm doing a project for my graphic design class and part of it involves creating the matrix effect.
This = Matrix Effect
https://www.softpedia.com/screenshots/Matrix-Effect_1.png

However, when I follow this tutorial (http://www.bluesfear.com/tutorials/matrix.php) , I can't even do the second step and yes, I do suck at photo shop so bear with me.  I open up a new document in photoshop cs3 and then, since I already have a white background , I go straight to step two and go to filter but when I go down to texture, I cannot click on it.  For some reason, it doesn't allow me to use texture.  I tried creating a layer and all this other stuff but my attempts didn't work.  Any help?  Thanks.

When you create a new layer chose white background-do not fill transparent layer with white color

Are you trying to use the grain on a new layer or the original background layer?

The default Background layer is always locked when you open a new document, thus can't be filtered. Double click it to make it an editable layer.

I found the answer to my problem.  When I opened a new document, my Color Mode was on CMYK instead of RGB.  I switched it back to RGB and everything worked fine. I don't know why (remember I am special when it comes to photoshop) but it worked.  Also, thanks for the suggestions guys.
