As far as I know, the president always travels with both planes. The second is both back up and decoy. If the decoy is being used for something else, I'm sure that the secret service doesn't want anyone to know that. They would rather have people think that the president might be on the plane over New York.

And I wouldn't call that hindsight, I would call is contingency planning. and it wouldn't do much good to tell everyone if the plan to protect the president by using a decoy plane depended on subterfuge. I wouldn't doubt there will be a press release saying as much.

IMO some people just want to be angry at PBO for what ever reason.
Hindsight would be if someone passed judgment on reactions after the fact. The flight path is real clear coming in to Macdill AFB too (a wee bit scary). We know when and where his plane is. There really isn't reason for New yorkers to think that the Presidents (2nd) plane was in New York today, decoy or not. Especially when Obama is over 200 miles away.
The point was that if the secret service had to take PBO from DC to some place safe because of an attack, they would have only had one plane available. And if there was a press release telling everyone that the decoy plane was in NYC on that day, then the president would be flying without a decoy and then the attackers would know that and that makes him more vulnerable.  As far a contingency planning, that contingency is way out there, but I think that's the type of stuff those guys in the secret service and the Air Force are paid to think about.

Anyway, they should have used photoshop and saved the tax payers the fuel.
I expect PBO'c office will have press release outlining something like I posted and a little apology.
I get that... it's very far stretched. Rather than considering the possible hysteria fallout, or if they actually had to deal with the possibility of an attack (no apparent decoys) they opted for the photo opportunity.

They've already said they were going to apologize.

We get announcements in the Pentaghetto every time there's going to be a flyover (Arlington or otherwise).

If it pissed off Bloomterd... than the mission was a success..lol
I don't think this was the best idea to do this... lot of New Yorkers remember 9/11 like it was yesterday...
This whole thing was done for a photo-op?   If that's true... than it's ridiculous....

He's the president.  If he wants to fly over the statue of liberty, then he can.  It would have been a security risk telling people that he was going to.  When people criticize Obama for stupid things like this, it takes away from the significant things he really is screwing up on.

Well, apparently it isn't Obama's fault (never is right?) and he's mad too..  I wouldn't be surprised to find out later he was on it.  Wow, what a PR disaster.

I'd say directly terrorizing the people of NY for a spell is a significant story.

So.....did they get the pics they wanted or...?

...I mean, it would surely be even worse if they don't even use the pictures they obtained.

After watching a few videos, I can definitely see why some New Yorkers would be VERY worried.

However, I don't get the media outrage.  It was a poor choice, but seriously...

It's actually a really cool picture.

Worth it though? Not at all.
